✨ What is the AR (Accelerated Reader) Program?
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading management software from Renaissance Learning that helps teachers track students’ reading progress.
How It Works:
Students read books from the AR list.
After finishing, they take quizzes (without using the book).
Points are awarded based on difficulty and quiz performance.
The AR Reading program helps students grow into confident readers by:
Building fluency (reading smoothly and accurately).
Building stamina (reading for longer periods).
Building confidence in reading skills.
Strengthening comprehension (understanding what is read).
STAR assessments will be given periodically to keep each child’s Lexile level up to date.
📝 AR Requirements at NEC Prep
As your child takes AR quizzes, the program tracks proficiency (overall percentage correct).
EVERY CHILD’S PROFICIENCY GOAL IS 85% OR BETTER.
At the end of each six weeks, your child’s proficiency score = a quiz grade in ELA.
Example: If your child’s proficiency is 92%, their quiz grade is 92.
📌 AR quiz grades = 30% of the ELA average.
⚠️ Important Notes:
AR is required for all students.
Quizzes can only be taken at school.
Encourage at-home reading! If the book is on AR, students may take the quiz during school hours.
To check if a book is AR, visit: www.arbookfind.com.
Just like last year, NEC Prep will have an AR Store located in the library.
Students “buy” prizes with their AR points.
More points = More prizes! 🎉
💡 How You Can Help Your Child with AR
📖 Encourage your child to read every night for at least 20 minutes.
✅ Check in with your child about their AR progress.
🙌 Remind them to take AR seriously and do their best on quizzes.
📚 Fun Fact: Students who read 20 minutes a night are exposed to over 1.8 million words a year—a powerful boost to academic achievement!
✨ Together, we can help our students at NEC Prep become stronger, more confident readers!
If you have not signed up for REMIND, please do so immediately. This is in place of Classdojo this year. A signup paper was given by your child’s homeroom teacher.

KEYS TO SUCCESS FOR YOUR CHILD:
Make sure your child is reading a book of interest for at least 20 minutes every day. This will help your child with many reading skills, including fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and learning to enjoy reading (make sure it is a book your child likes- if you need books, let me know)
Have daily conversations with your child. Ask your child about his or her day. This sets your child up for success by making him or her feel important to you. Let your child ask you about your day as well.
Questions to ask: What was your favorite part of the day? What can you do differently to have an even better day tomorrow?
Check in with your child on his or her homework. In 4th grade ELA, students have one homework assignment a week, and it is due on Fridays. This is 10% of your child’s grade, so please ensure your child is doing that assignment every week.
Use the Parent Portal to check in on your child’s grades weekly.
Check your child’s teacher’s web pages and Remind regularly.
UPCOMING EVENTS/ IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:
If your child takes his or her chromebook home, he or she must bring it everyday and have it 100% charged.
Picture Day- September 4th (students must wear school uniforms)
Recently, your child completed their AR STAR assessment on Accelerated Reader. This test:
Provides a Lexile level.
Suggests a level range for book selection (classroom or library).
