Revision

    • A review from yesterday: We learned that revision is also changing or transforming your writing to create a different tone, meaning, etc.
    • In this case, we want to transform our biographies to sound more like bedtime stories!

Revision with our Goodnight Story Biographies

    • We highlighted in red the parts of our biography that sound a lot like a report or would be too complex for children.
    • Then, we worked to transform those sentences or words into more kid-friendly or story-like wording!

Thursday, January 17, 2019

Revision

      • Today we discussed the question, "What is revision?"
      • We talked about how revision can be things like: making your writing better, fixing mistakes, etc.

"Battle Bunny"

    • To help us better understand what else revision is, we read the book "Battle Bunny." Basically, it's a book that was originally called "Birthday Bunny," but somebody crossed out words and added words and pictures to create a new story called, "Battle Bunny."
    • We created our own "Battle Bunny" pages by revising the original "Birthday Bunny" pages!

So, revision is also...

    • We learned that revision is also changing or transforming your writing to create a different tone, meaning, etc.
    • In this case, we want to transform our biographies to sound more like bedtime stories!

AWUBIS Phrases

  • Today, we found AWUBIS sentences from our own biographies! Most of us already have these kinds of sentences.
  • As a reminder, the AWUBIS "cheat sheet" is posted to the right.
    • AWUBIS is an acronym! Each letter stands for words that you can add to your writing to add more detail, etc.
  • Then, on the back of our worksheet from yesterday, we wrote down an AWBUIS sentence from our biography.
    • Then, we wrote it a second way! (AWUBIS phrases can be at the beginning, end, or middle of a sentence. It depends what you want to emphasize in the sentence!)
    • We put a star next to the way we like best and explained why.

AWUBIS Phrases

  • Today, we looked at how to make our biographies sound even more like stories, specifically with AWUBIS phrases.
  • To do that, we looked over the AWUBIS "cheat sheet" posted to the right.
    • AWUBIS is an acronym! Each letter stands for words that you can add to your writing to add more detail, etc.
  • Then, we followed the instructions on the AWUBIS unscrambling worksheet (on the same document to the right!).
    • How many different ways you can write an AWUBIS sentence?
    • When do they need commas? When do they not?

AWUBIS and Introductory Phrases

  • Today, we looked at how to make our biographies sound even more like stories.
  • To do that, we analyzed the sentences attached to the right.
    • What do you notice?
    • We noticed that these sentences all had a little phrase at the beginning of each sentence relating to time! Each of these phrases adds extra information and has a comma before continuing on to the rest of the sentence.
    • These are called AWUBIS or Introductory Phrases. To check if it's one of these phrases, you can take it out and the sentence should still make sense. These phrases help make your writing sound smoother and more like a story.
  • Then, we underlined the ones we found in the example biographies!

"What makes a good role model?" Pink Worksheet- Due Monday, January 7th at the end of the period

  • Today, we investigated the question "Are superheroes good role models?"
  • We gathered evidence to support our opinion. What are the positive and negative qualities and effects of superheroes? Please refer to the YouTube video and articles to the right.
  • Then, we answered #6 on the back of our pink worksheet. It says "Role models always have a positive effect on others." Basically, based on our study of superheroes, we learned that superheroes aren't always positive. So, should they still be considered role models? You will decide if you agree or disagree. Then, support your answer with evidence from the YouTube video or articles.

Word of the Year

  • For our Scribble, we chose a word that we want to represent our goals, hopes, etc. for this year. We wrote it on the lined side of a notecard. Then, we wrote a few sentences explaining why we chose that word. On the blank side of the notecard, we wrote the word bigger and decorated it. We're displaying them in the hall!
