Hi my name is Courtney Hardin and I am the STEM teacher. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. I have been a teacher for 17 years and this is my second year teaching STEM. I am very excited to see what all we will be exploring and learning about. I have previously taught Language Arts and Social Studies and have my Reading Specialist Certification. I earned my degree and certification from Appalachian State University.
I have lived in Morganton for 12 years with my son, Wyatt, and my daughter, Emma. They are my world and keep me very busy! I am really happy to be back at New Dimensions this year and look forward to this fun new adventure!
Among all the many things going on in STEM, students will also be learning about the following:
Kindergarteners will learn about exploring design, pushes and pulls, the human body, animals and algorithms, sunlight and weather, and the needs and impacts of living things.
First grade will learn about light and sound, observing the light of the sun, moon, stars, animal adaptations, animated storytelling, and designs inspired by nature.
Second grade will learn about properties of matter, form and function in science, the changing Earth, grids, and the diversity of life of living things.
Third grade will learn about the science of flight, forces and interactions, variation or traits, programming patterns, factors and hazards of weather, life cycles and survival, and environmental changes.
Fourth grade will learn about computer systems, input and output of the human brain, waves and properties of light, the structure and function of organisms, Earth: past, present, and future, human impact and natural disasters of the Earth.
Fifth grade will learn about robotics and automation, infection detection, modeling and simulation of infection, properties and reactions of matter, the flow of matter and energy in ecosystems, patterns in the universe, and Earth's water and interconnected systems.
Middle School will also have STEM during elective time. We will be working on many engineering topics including Lego Robotics.
