Week of 11/3 to 11/7
ELA (Barus) - In Language Arts this week we will begin unit 2 in our reading book called Adaptations. Students will read texts that show the ways in which living things depend on each other. We will read informational texts and use text structures and features to build a better understanding of the ways living things adapt. This week our text is entitled, Feathers - Not Just for Flying. In this text, we will learn about the different jobs that feathers do. We will continue spelling this week with a spelling test on Friday. Remember that students should have completed four sorts or three sorts and a pretest with their words by Friday.
ELA (Cline) -In ELA, we’re diving into fiction! Students will explore the key elements of fiction by reading and comparing complex literary texts. We’ll focus on understanding how plot and setting shape a story, and students will expand their vocabulary by using context clues to determine unfamiliar words. In addition, we’ll kick off a new word study for spelling—our test will be on Friday.
Math (Hennessey) - This week we will be working with angles to learn how to identify them by type of angle. We will also begin our work with multipliction using the distributive property and area models. Students will receive new vocabulary for multiplication and division. The test will be Friday November 15th. Students have a nightly game in Quizlet to practice matching the terms with their definition. We check homework daily. Look for this in their green homework folder. Their word problem of the day is classwork. Please remind your child to use CUBES when solving word problems. You will find this in their math notebooks. Also, please make sure their incomplete work other than the word problem of the day and their homework is completed and returned to school the next day.
Math (Niehoff) - We are moving into mulitiplicaiton using the distributive property and area models
Science (Cline) -In Science, we’ll continue learning about the different types of energy. Students will practice identifying and labeling various forms of energy by examining real-world examples.
Science (Hennessey) - We are going to move this week into potential and kinetic energy to learn how force affects objects.
Social Studies - (Barus) - We will finish our study of North Carolina's three regions. Each student will be assigned a region to research and complete a travel brochure on that area.
Social Studies (Niehoff) - In Social Studies we will be continuing our study of the movement of people and goods and how that has impacted North Carolina over time.
~Expect homework nightly. Please look at your child's planner to see what homework they have and sign that they have completed it.
~Fourth grade is a year in which we encourage responsibility and independence. Hold your children accountable for listing homework in their agenda and having all the materials they need to do work at home and at school.
~Ways to help your student at home:
Have them work on any of the digital platforms that we use during the school day. This includes: Reflex, Readworks, Moby Max, and Epic. Ms. Hennessey provided some math websites during open house that can also be used.
Study nightly with spelling and vocabulary words.
Make sure your child completes all homework and any other incomplete work in their green homework folders nightly.
