The Engineering Machine Shop -- Eugene Heyse Machine shop manager 574.631.2551
The Engineering Machine Shop is a full service design and fabrication shop staffed with progressive minded craftsmen and state of the art machinery. Our use of CNC machine tools and CAD/CAM software allows us the ability to produce complex designs in a wide variety of materials in a timely and cost effective manner. We work directly from blueprints or drawings provided by our customers or take ideas from individuals and engineer their particular needs. Our wide and diverse collection of capabilities serves the entire community, from simple to complex with precision in the scientific, medical, mechanical and artistic disciplines.
The Notre Dame Engineering Machine Shop provides convenient, flexible and cost effective services to the Notre Dame research community for the fabrication, construction, and design of precision research instruments. As a full service shop, we are equipped with:
- Drill Presses
- Horizontal and vertical saws
- Welding equipment
- Computer controlled milling and lathe equipment (CNC).
We specialize in the prototyping, designing, and manufacturing of custom tooling. With our state-of-the-art equipment, we are able to produce high quality parts while holding extremely tight tolerances with minimal lead time. From exotic alloys to common 6061 aluminum, we machine all types of materials and specialize in other materials such as plastics, wood products and machinable glass. We will work from hand drawn sketches, prints or just an idea in your head. We can also reverse engineer your existing parts with any alterations you request.
We are located in two locations. The lower level of the Hessert Laboratory for Aerospace Research and the First Floor of Cushing Hall on the campus on the University of Notre Dame.
State-of-the-art equipment combined with expert technical advice. The Engineering Machine Shop allows both engineering students and faculty alike to carry out experiments on the cutting edge of technology. From the most minute fiber optic connectors to steam turbine parts, every day brings a new challenge to machine tooling.
