CGM@ND Workshop II Kylemore, Ireland

September 3-15, 2023

A 10-day summit of talks, activities, and writing retreat

 Scientific rationale:

From the observational, theory, and simulation fronts, we have made great progress in understanding the physics and importance of the complex interstellar medium and circumgalactic in the evolution of galaxies. However, there are still many open questions and problems connecting the small-scale structures to the large-scale structures of the CGM and the micro-physics to the macro-physics. The second CGM@ND workshop aims to bring theorists, instrumentalists, and observers together to discuss the latest discoveries on the gas flows in and out of galaxies with a look toward the future. It hopes to bring simulations, theory, and observations a step closer, fostering collaborations across these groups. Topical discussion sessions will be developed that will aim to address some of the key questions that will arise during the workshop.

The 10-day workshop will be held at Kylemore Abbey, a Benedictine monastery on the grounds of Kylemore Castle in Connemara, County Galway, near the west coast of Ireland. The focus will be on exchanges of new work and fostering deep collaborations, with ample time for joint work and exploration of new ideas.

Format:

Presentations should aim to address key questions of the relationship between gas and galaxy evolution and to stimulate discussions between the participants. Each speaker will be tasked with leading a discussion to determine what we need to do next rather than only presenting their latest results.  Mornings in the workshop will be dedicated to more formal talks and discussion, while afternoons will focus on collaboration and writing.

Scientific Organizing Committee:

The workshop is organized in collaboration with Notre Dame International and hosted by the University of Notre Dame’s Kylemore Abbey Global Centre and Department of Physics and Astronomy.
