Is It Engineering?

Engineering is an approach to solving problems and creating a better world for all living things.

Engineering makes a difference because it keeps our global world healthy, secure, joyful, and sustainable. See our page on the four themes of Engineering Grand Challenges .

  • Health

  • Security

  • Joy of Living (well-being)

  • Sustainable

What makes it Engineering?

Engineering uses knowledge of all types to find ways to improve and create products and processes, so what makes it different from all of those other things? Is engineering part of science? No! They are two different things, that frequently use each other. Science works to understand the world around us, and engineering seeks to use that knowledge to improve life. Engineering problems have things that define what one can and cannot do, called constraints, and ways to know if the solution you came up with is acceptable, called criteria.

Engineering uses science to understand and predict, mathematics as the language in which to communicate, and the social sciences to understand and interpret results and their impact on the world.
