Free and Open Societies Project

The Free and Open Societies project I direct was established in July 2019 as a successor to the Economic, Legal, and Political Foundations of Free Societies program I co-directed with (now Emeritus) Professor Steve Margolis (Economics) from 2004-19.  The new project is supported by grants from the John William Pope Foundation and Charles Koch Foundation.  The goal is to encourage discussion, analysis, and teaching of ideas central to free and open societies--ideas developed and advocated by political and economic theorists and philosophers like John Locke, Adam Smith, and John Stuart Mill.  It supports a variety of activities, most of which began with the "Foundations of Free Societies" program and the related "Programs in the Classical Liberal Tradition".   FOSP was named an American Council of Trustees and Alumni "Oasis of Excellence" in September 2023.  ACTA's press release is here.
