System Analysis

To integrate and optimize a biorefinery process, techno-economic analysis is performed for all our projects.

We have developed a detailed Aspen Plus model for biosugar production. To maximize the economic return, the model includes byproducts production based on the experimental results. We thoroughly consider heat integration, product yield, biomass cost, and market place. Our experimental design is governed by sensitivity analysis to develop the most economical engineering process. Our lab is well equipped for bench to pilot scale biomass pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, catalytic upgrading, product recovery, and detailed chemical analysis.

Feedstock properties are an important factor affecting process yields and economics of fast pyrolysis biorefineries. We have developed a fast pyrolysis process model sensitive to feedstock properties based on the experimental results. An economic analysis is conducted to quantify process economics and to evaluate the impacts of carbon, ash and moisture content in biomass feedstocks on process yields and energy consumptions. We are also working on biomass supply chain development considering remote depots and preprocessing configuration in Southeastern US.
