Hey! I'm Berkeley. I graduated from the NC State University Nonprofit Management Graduate Certificate program in the Spring of 2024, and this site was the final project of my Independent Study with Dr. Amanda Stewart.
A little about my background – I was raised in Texas and received my undergraduate degree in Natural Resources, Recreation, and Tourism from Colorado State University in 2015. After moving back to Texas, I struggled to find a job within my field (because North Texas has a general lack of trees, nature preserves, or nature education to begin with...), so I fell back on my background in communications and marketing. I eventually found my way to North Carolina and to Blue Sky Funders Forum, an affinity group and membership-based organization that brings together grantmakers supporting access to the outdoors, environmental education, and outdoor experiences. More on the long, winding road to my current career here. TLDR: no matter what life throws at you, you have to be your biggest champion and advocate. Don't let anyone diminish your power and passions in life.
In my role at the Blue Sky Funders Forum, I design programs and events, community-building and networking spaces, and avenues of learning for funders, grantmakers, and movement leaders. I challenge funders to rethink the ways in which they operate and guide them toward a more trust-based, equitable, and sustainable way of distributing wealth. It's a privilege I try not to take lightly.
While my time in the graduate certificate program has ended, I hope this site continues to serve future students. Please know I'm a resource if you ever want to chat about participatory grantmaking, working in the philanthropy field, being a white ally, and/or self-advocacy and chasing your dreams no matter what.
