In-state tuition is substantially less expensive than out-of-state tuition. Out-of-state students (except international students) are strongly encouraged to gain in-state residency by the start of their second year.
The UNC System uses a centralized Residency Determination system. This system will not let you submit a reclassification request until you have lived in North Carolina for at least a year and will take into consideration when you begin making residency acts (e.g., getting an NC driver's license, registering to vote in NC, registering your vehicle in NC, etc.), so I strongly suggest starting these acts as soon as you move.

This process can be confusing, so if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
