WHAT DOES NCSU STATISTIC'S FOCUS ON?
NC State's Statistics Department specializes in research across many different industries, specifically using data and models to help these individual industries to perform at a higher level; constantly pushing for improvements through new breakthroughs found through our work.
Amongst many other fields, NC State undergraduate and graduate students have been known to work in:
Machine Learning
BioinformaticsÂ
Financial Statistics
Medicine
Sports Analytics
Etc.
Dr. Schliep is an Associate Professor for our Department of Statistics, here at NC State. She works in a variety of different fields such as nature conservation, climate change, and even
with the NBA.
In a publication from earlier this year between her and Chris Custer from Penn State, statistical models such as "jsPGA" were implemented in order to accurately predict how eight species of fish would react to climate change throughout the next century.

It's through the work & research of members of our department like Dr. Schliep that push industries forward. The implementation of technology & statistics into their models help us create more accurate models to better predict crucial parts of our lives whether it is our economy, politics, sports, finances, or climate.
BACKGROUND / OVERVIEW:
HOW OUR FIELDS UTILIZE STATISTICS IN THEIR RESEARCH:
All of our respective fields / disciplines, Math, Chemistry, and of course Statistics utilize Statistical Inference, Regression Models, Hypothesis Testing, and Data Analysis to not only ensure their research is accurate, but also to strengthen their data through statistical verification.
Statistical Inference: Using data from samples to draw conclusions or make generalizations about a larger population.
Regression Models: Statistical model / tool used to look at the relationship & strength between variables in order to determine trends.
Hypothesis Testing: Statistical method to decide whether to reject or accept a proposed hypothesis.
Data Analysis: Finding significant patterns, trends, and conclusions from data, used in a large range of fields.
INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACHES:
EXAMPLES OF STATISTICS IN OTHER FIELDS:
Health & Medicine:
Used within biostatistics to design clinical trials and help to analyze medical data to advance the TH field.
Economics:
Used within the finance industry for risk analysis, forecasting, and data analysis.
Environmental Sciences:
Despite seeming like completely different worlds, statistics is oftentimes used in climate modeling through the use of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) for Geospatial studies.

WAYS THE COLLEGE OF SCIENCES SHOULD HIGHLIGHT RESEARCH:
I think that there are a few ways that NC State can continue to share research findings & opportunities within the College of Sciences.
