Welcome! I'm Mary Estrada. I will be your online instructor for Linguistics for ESL Professionals. I aim to teach with flexibility, respect, and kindness. I want to support you as best as I can.
Please watch this one-minute video and explore the rest of this site to prepare for week one of our course. The link to log in to our Moodle (available January 9) is at the bottom of this page.
I look forward to working with you and to getting to know you!
Mary
(You are welcome to call me Mary, Ms. Estrada, or Professor Estrada)
This is a fully online course that begins January 9
It does not have regular, synchronous sessions (we will not meet weekly in Zoom)
All of your work will be completed asynchronously in Moodle.
This is not a self-paced course. You will learn in a community with your classmates and me in Moodle. We are in this together.
The course is organized into 15 weekly units that will run from Sunday to Sunday.
Weekly forum posts are due Thursdays at 11:59 pm. Assignments and two replies to forum posts are due Sundays at 11:59 pm.
Get out your calendar and make a note to:
read the weekly announcements sent to your NCSU email on Sundays
log in to the course early in the week (check out the unit, assess the workload, and plan your work)
post to the forum on Thursdays by midnight
turn in your other assignments by Sundays at midnight
Download the Moodle app and use it to check in frequently on our course
Reach out to me early and often when you are lost or confused!

I'm here to help you! My preferred method of communication is email: mary_estrada@ncsu.edu
I will make every effort to respond to emails within 24 hours. Emails received over the weekend will likely be answered on Mondays.
I’m happy to meet with you! Just email to request an appointment, include a few dates/times that work for you, then meet me at our agreed upon time on Zoom at https://ncsu.zoom.us/my/maryestrada
If you are new to online learning and the Moodle learning management system, check out the Learning with Moodle student guide.
If you ever have a problem accessing your Moodle course site, contact the general NC State Help Desk at 919-515-HELP or help@ncsu.edu. Sometimes, initial access challenges may be related to your Unity ID or password. If you do contact the Help Desk, let them know you are in this course, your section number, and that you are trying to access this Moodle course through WolfWare, just in case the issues are with Moodle. You can email me, as well, so that I can be aware of any commonly occurring issues.
