Outstanding French Minor Award
In the spring of 2024, I received the outstanding French Minor award for my work in WLFR 315, French Civilization and Culture. The class did a deep dive into the foundations of the country, the language, and the people who make up France. Nominated by Dr. Michael Garval, it was an honor to receive this award which serves as a testimony to my passion for the francophone world.
Language Exchange
As part of my time in the French Minor, I participated in a language exchange. I was matched up with a native French speaker named Pierre, who was part of the Skema exchange program here at NC State. During the second half of the Spring 2025 semester, Pierre and I met weekly to discuss and compare the United States and France - spending 30 minutes a week in French and 30 in English. Throughout the process, I learned a lot about French culture, society, and what makes our livelihoods similar and different from one another. The Language exchange was one of the most valuable experiences I had at NC State, as it gave me the opportunity to get to know France's culture on a personal and a national scale, while also sharing my own insight about the United States.
French Ted Talk
As another part of my French Minor, I took a course called Approaches to French Translation (WLFR 411). In this class, we rigorously learned methods of translating both from French to English, as well as from English to French. For the final project of the course, I had to put to use all of the knowledge I had garnered and the translation strategies I had practiced in order to translate a TED Talk of my choosing from French into English. I chose to translate a TED Talk that discusses what it takes to learn languages, and the benefits of being able to communicate with so many different people. I am really proud of how this translation turned out, because the TED Talk itself really resonated with me, and it took hours of meticulously crafting each sentence in the way that I thought best preserved the French meaning. Provided here are both the video as well as the translation.
