The Chemistry Department at NC State University finally has an electronic newsletter! We know it has been a long time since you last heard from us, so here is a brief update on our faculty, staff, and students.
We currently have 29 tenured and tenure-track, 10 teaching, and 7 research faculty. A full list with contact information can be found here: Faculty
Our faculty members excel in their roles as teachers, mentors, and researchers. Presently, we have 54 active research grants that are sponsored by federal, state and private industry. Our general and organic chemistry programs serve over 7,000 students per year all across the university.
We couldn’t do any of this without the active support of our staff. We have 21 staff members that excel in their dedication to our research and teaching mission. A full list with contact information can be found here: Staff
We currently have 131 Graduate Students. In 2016 we granted a total of 26 PhD and 7 MS degrees. We also have a total of 216 undergraduate students enrolled in the Spring 2017 semester. Last year we graduated 19 BS and 19 BA chemistry majors.
20 (or so) Honors and Awards
Here are some of the awards and accolades received by members of the Department in 2016 (in no particular order)
- Dr. Elena Jakubikova received an NSF CAREER award. This is the most prestigious award offered by the NSF in support of early career-development activities of teacher-scholars who effectively integrate research and education.
- Dr. Phil Castellano was named Goodnight Innovation Distinguished Chair, NC State University
- Dr. Jim Martin received the 2017 North Carolina Local ACS section Volunteer of the Year Award.
- Dr. Josh Pierce was selected as a 2016-2017 University Faculty Scholar.
- Kyle Virgil received a Fulbright scholarship.
- Dr. Laura Sremaniak was appointed Chair of the National Women Chemists Committee of the ACS.
- Dr. Gavin Williams was the recipient of the inaugural College of Sciences Honor a Professor award.
- Melinda Box received the Marcus Hobbs award from the local section of the ACS.
- Dr. Reza Ghiladi and Dr. Gavin Williams have each received Chancellor's Innovation Funds to help commercialize technology developed in their labs.
- Dr. Reza Ghiladi was also the recipient of one of the the University's Outstanding Teacher Awards at the Office of Faculty Development’s Teaching Award Ceremony.
- Rachael Hall (Williams’ lab) received an NIH Molecular Biotechnology Training Program fellowship. She will intern at GSK this summer as part of this program.
- Dr. Maria Oliver-Hoyo was the College of Science's nominee for the Board of Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching.
- Samantha Smith (Sombers’ lab) was honored with a Monitoring Molecules in Neuroscience Fellowship that allowed her to travel to Gothenburg, Sweden to present her research that was recently published in ACS Chemical Neuroscience.
- Dr. David Muddiman was elected president of the United States Human Proteome Organization and also received a 2016 Graduate School Outstanding Graduate Faculty Mentor Award
- Dr. Maria Gallardo-Williams received the Gertrude Cox Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching and was also named a DELTA Faculty Fellow for 2015-2016
- Vishwas Rao (undergraduate) was named a 2016 Barry Goldwater Scholar by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship Foundation
- Dr. Mike Whangbo has been awarded professorships at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and ChinShandong University, in China
- Sofia Garakyaraghi (Castellano's lab) was selected to participate in the 67thLindau Nobel Laureate Meeting this summer in Lindau, Germany
