Winston-Salem NC
Winston-Salem is the county seat for Forsyth County and the 5th most populous city in North Carolina.
Originally, the Winston-Salem area was mostly inhabited by Saura, Catawba, and Keyauwee tribes. The Moravians were the first Europeans to settle in the area, founding Salem in 1766. Old Salem retains numerous old Moravian structures, offering a glimpse into the past.
Because Moravians believed educating both boys and girls, they established Salem Academy & College in 1772 which is the country's oldest girls' school currently in operation.
In the 1800s, Winston became a regional manufacturing leader. After the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company was founded in 1875, Winston was nicknamed "The Camel City" due to the prominence of its tobacco industry.
The towns of Winston and Salem were officially incorporated in 1913, after a referendum, as Winston-Salem.
The city has 82 parks, and famous landmarks such as the Reynolda House, Winston-Salem State University, Wake Forest University, and University of North Carolina School of the Arts among others.
Winston-Salem State University was founded in 1892 as Slater Industrial Academy. In 1934 it was known as the Winston Salem Teachers College and in 1969 was renamed Winston-Salem State University. It is home to a diverse student body and a variety of academic programs, and notable for its commitment to serving African American communities.
