How did you decide on your career path? 

Looking back, I discovered my career path by following the breadcrumbs my curiosity led me to in each season of my life. By the end of my time at NCSSM, I had found and confirmed my love for Chemistry. So, in undergrad, it was an easy decision for me to pursue a chemistry degree while being pre-med. After graduation, I recognized that I was tired, burnt out, and wanted some real life work experience before going into medical school, and so I did! I was able to get a job in a contract research organization (CRO), where I did pharmaceutical and bio-analytical lab work.

During medical school, I rediscovered my love for research again. In undergrad, I had done basic science research and realized quickly it was not for me. I initially thought I was not a research-person at all, until I discovered clinical research and translational research. Towards the end of medical school, it dawned on me that I really liked to solve problems, especially real life problems with big impacts. I had also caught the tech bug and was trying to figure out how I would marry Tech & Health. That’s when I discovered Informatics. I decided to take a huge gamble and enroll in a Master of Management in Clinical Informatics program at Duke right after medical school instead of following the conventional path.

Today, I support Health AI research work at DukeHealth, a job I truly love that’s intellectually stimulating, fun, and probably ahead of its time. For now, it looks like I made the right bet given how primed healthcare is for disruption and the fast pace at which Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) has entered the consumer space in the last 1-2 years.

¿Cómo decidió su trayectoria profesional?

Echando la vista atrás, descubrí mi trayectoria profesional siguiendo las migas de pan a las que me llevaba mi curiosidad en cada época de mi vida. Al final de mi estancia en el NCSSM, había encontrado y confirmado mi amor por la química. Por lo tanto, en la licenciatura, fue una decisión fácil para mí seguir una licenciatura en química, mientras que ser pre-medicina. ¡Después de la graduación, me di cuenta de que estaba cansado, quemado, y quería un poco de experiencia de trabajo en la vida real antes de entrar en la escuela de medicina, y así lo hice! Conseguí un trabajo en una organización de investigación por contrato (CRO), donde trabajé en laboratorios farmacéuticos y bioanalíticos.

Durante la carrera de medicina, redescubrí de nuevo mi amor por la investigación. En la licenciatura había hecho investigación en ciencias básicas y enseguida me di cuenta de que no era para mí. Al principio pensé que no me gustaba nada la investigación, hasta que descubrí la investigación clínica y traslacional. Hacia el final de la carrera, me di cuenta de que me gustaba resolver problemas, sobre todo problemas de la vida real con grandes repercusiones. También me había picado el gusanillo de la tecnología e intentaba averiguar cómo casaría la tecnología y la salud. Fue entonces cuando descubrí la informática. Decidí apostar fuerte y matricularme en un máster de gestión en informática clínica en Duke justo después de acabar la carrera de Medicina, en lugar de seguir el camino convencional.

En la actualidad, apoyo el trabajo de investigación sobre IA sanitaria en DukeHealth, un trabajo que realmente me encanta, intelectualmente estimulante, divertido y probablemente adelantado a su tiempo. Por ahora, parece que hice la apuesta correcta dado lo preparada que está la sanidad para la disrupción y el rápido ritmo al que la Inteligencia Artificial (IA) ha entrado en el espacio del consumidor en los últimos 1-2 años.

What are your interests outside of work? 

I love storytelling, and in some ways, I tell stories with data now. But creatively, I love film-making, video editing, production and directing. Those are hobbies that had its early start here at NCSSM too with Joe Liles slideshow mini-term. I also love spending time with friends and family, my best friend (my wife) and nowadays, changing diapers at lightning speed while mastering the art of convincing a sleepy baby to fall asleep. 

¿Cuáles son sus intereses fuera del trabajo?

Me encanta contar historias y, en cierto modo, ahora las cuento con datos. Pero creativamente, me encanta hacer películas, editar vídeos, producir y dirigir. Son aficiones que también empezaron aquí en el NCSSM con el minicurso de presentación de diapositivas de Joe Liles. También me encanta pasar tiempo con amigos y familiares, con mi mejor amiga (mi mujer) y, hoy en día, cambiar pañales a la velocidad del rayo mientras domino el arte de convencer a un bebé somnoliento para que se duerma.

What advice would you give to your 13-year old self? 

Don’t be in a rush to get to “the end”, whatever end means to you. Enjoy the journey, make lots of memories, take lots of pictures and videos along the way. Learn to communicate well, and learn to communicate with different kinds of people and with different professional domains. Get mentors early, but also give back and have your own mentees early. Read, and meditate on books about growth mindset till you get it. Learn about self-care and what you need for self-care especially in very stressful, difficult scenarios and life situations. Build your therapy / self-care toolkit early on in life and share it with your support system. And lastly, don’t be afraid to dream big dreams… just know that you can be a dreamer, but don’t stay in bed.

¿Qué consejo le daría a su yo de 13 años?

No tengas prisa por llegar "al final", sea lo que sea el final para ti. Disfruta del viaje, crea muchos recuerdos, haz muchas fotos y vídeos por el camino. Aprende a comunicarte bien, y aprende a comunicarte con distintos tipos de personas y con distintos ámbitos profesionales. Consigue mentores pronto, pero también retribuye y ten tus propios alumnos pronto. Lee y medita libros sobre mentalidad de crecimiento hasta que lo entiendas. Aprende sobre el autocuidado y lo que necesitas para cuidarte, especialmente en situaciones muy estresantes y difíciles. Construye tu kit de herramientas de terapia/autocuidado desde el principio de tu vida y compártelo con tu sistema de apoyo. Y, por último, no tengas miedo de soñar grandes sueños... que sepas que puedes ser un soñador, pero no te quedes en la cama.

I am also always on the lookout for new and exciting technologies that can make NetApp an even better cloud solutions provider.

Educational Background:  I attended Brooklyn Technical High School (Brooklyn Tech) in New York City where I majored in Computer Science. Brooklyn Tech is 1 of the 3 originally specialized high schools operated by the NYC DOE that focus on STEM. It was here that my computer science fire was ignited. I went on to study Computer Science at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) where I majored in Software Engineering and Telecommunications and minored in Micro-Computer Based Design. I hold a BS in Computer Science from Georgia Tech.

How did you decide on your current career path:  I am a computer scientist at heart. If I think about it, I was a big fan of math and science early on in school and that led me to computer science. I followed the path that software development carried me, always keeping my eyes and ears open for opportunities that were interesting to me. Technology is so dynamic, it changes often. I decided that I wanted to ride that wave and that I was comfortable with continually learning throughout my career. I also evaluated all along the way whether I liked what I was doing. That part is important!

¿Cómo se decidió por su carrera actual?: Soy informático de corazón. Si lo pienso bien, ya en la escuela me gustaban mucho las matemáticas y las ciencias, y eso me llevó a la informática. Seguí el camino que me llevaba el desarrollo de software, siempre con los ojos y los oídos abiertos a las oportunidades que me resultaban interesantes. La tecnología es tan dinámica que cambia a menudo. Decidí que quería subirme a esa ola y que me sentía cómodo aprendiendo continuamente a lo largo de mi carrera. También evalué en todo momento si me gustaba lo que estaba haciendo. Esa parte es importante.

Interests outside of work:  In my free time I enjoy reading, gardening, fitness, traveling and spending time with family. I also enjoy speaking with young people, especially underrepresented minorities, about future careers in STEM.

Advice you would tell yourself at 13 years old:  I would tell 15 year old Mekka to enjoy this time! Prepare for your future but don’t forget to have fun! Practice balancing your time and energies. And never stop reading!
