Science Teaching Assistants (TAs) are seniors competitively chosen based on their demonstrated excellence in one or more of the sciences. TAs provide a wide variety of high level support to the science department, specifically to a faculty member who is familiar with your abilities. TA support may include some or all of the following:
Help in preparing labs, including setup and trouble-shooting lab
Assisting other students during lab, tutorial, and/or review sessions
Assisting with grading, within the guidelines of privacy restrictions
Assisting with other course management activities, such as helping to maintain a Canvas course page, photocopying, or other technology application
Other academic duties as assigned.
Science Communicators (SciCo) are seniors competitively chosen who assist the Dean of Science in communicating science to audiences, internal and external, using a wide variety of media. SciCo duties include some or all of the following:
Write regularly for 'Science Weekly'
Post regularly to the NCSSM Science Communication Facebook page
Enroll in a seminar on Science Communication (this counts as part of your campus service time)
Provide support for and reporting on science events, such as Science Festival, Research Symposium, Science Fair
Recruit guest bloggers and screen applicants for future SciCos
Interact with professionals working as science communicators at universities, foundations, museums and other institutions.
