Using Twitter professionally

Twitter is a powerhouse tool for a teacher who wants to focus on personalized learning for professional development. It is great for sharing ideas, connecting with other teachers, and following topics via hashtag. Twitter offers many applications to further your professional growth as a teacher.

Twitter is a service that allows for 140 character messages or “tweets.” These can be thoughts, links to interesting content, images—whatever you’re interested in sharing. Twitter allows users to create professional learning networks (PLN). It is without a doubt the best way to share and discover what is happening right now in education and the wider world.

Building a PLN using Twitter can be extremely powerful and rewarding.
- Start by creating your "professional" Twitter account by going to www.twitter.com or using the app on your phone.
- Set everything up with a professional tone. You will need to be specific.
  - What do you teach?
  - Background
  - Use images that reflect your love for education or your professional goals.
As mentioned in the videos, it is easier if you begin by following individuals who inspire you professionally.
- Look to see who they follow and follow them.
- You want to make sure that you ONLY follow those who reflect the same professional goals and aspirations as you do. This helps create a feed that will inspire you.
- Follow teachers who have a significant number of followers.
- Follow teachers who teach the same grade and/or subject as you do.
- Follow educational companies that you use in the classroom.
- Follow hashtags that interest you.
Once you have created a following that represents you professionally, put a "tweet" out there about something that you are doing in class.
