March 30, 2010 Your "inspired by" poem is due tomorrow.

March 31 Your long poem is due the day we return from spring break. You may turn it in early during class on April 1 if you prefer.

1/4/10 Read one of the short stories noted in your book. Brainstorm in your writer's notebook about what you might write for your own short story.

12/21 Read the first short story in the collection of your choice: Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri or Dubliners by James Joyce.

12/18 Your sports mag piece is due Monday at the BEGINNING OF CLASS. Please either put your documents in the shared drive (the P: drive, English dept folder, then the Creative Writing-Darcy Smith folder) OR email it to Darcy.Smith@newcanaan.k12.ct.us by 2:05 P.M. on Monday.

Finish reading the short story you received today in class. Then in your WN create a metaphor with a food item. Next, write a 1- to 2-page paper (either a personal essay or a snapshot of a possible short story) using this metaphor. Your paper must be typed and double-spaced, and it is due at the beginning of class on Wednesday.

We began our food review unit today by making lists of the following items:

10 foods you like

a positive adjective to describe each of those 10 foods (no repeats!)

10 foods you don't like and/or never want to try

a megative adjective to describe each of those foods (no repeats!)

As you eat this weekend, think of ways to describe what you are eating and how the food impacts your senses.

Be ready to write on Monday.

11/4/09:

No homework tonight! If you have not submitted your poetry portfolio, please plan to do so on Friday.

11/2/09:

Your poetry portfolio is due this Wednesday. Please have at least 5 poems in there. The three required forms are: sestina, sonnet and Whitman-inspired. The others are free choice from the several you were assigned or the ones you wrote on your own.

10/29:

Work on your sonnet which is due tomorrow. Plan to share your sonnet with the class. We will not have free reading this Friday.

Type out lyrics to ONE song you really like. Bring these lyrics to class tomorrow.
