Grading Policy

Your grade is determined by 3 categories...Professionalism, Concert Participation and Written Work/Playing Assessments

Professionalism (55% of grade): Each student starts with 10 points each day, and points are deducted if any deficiencies are noted.

• Preparedness: Having your playable instrument, music and a pencil with you. This also includes having your part prepared for rehearsal. In general, ask yourself: "If Mr. Winston asked me to play this by myself, would I be able to do it confidently?" If the answer is "no" then you need to prepare more!
• Behavior in class: Being a positive contributor in class with no negative behavior issues. You also need to be in class on time (not tardy without written note from another teacher), warming up within 30 seconds of the tardy bell.
• In Class Performance: Participation during full rehearsal and keeping focused during sectional rehearsal, whether playing with sound or not.

Concert Participation (25% of grade)

• The success of our group depends on the full sound from each player, so every student is expected to participate in the concerts that apply to their group (some groups have more concerts). I understand that emergencies come up and they will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis, usually resulting in an additional assignment to "make up" the concert. Please contact me at your earliest convenience to inform me if a concert will be missed. If a student misses a concert without an excuse note or email from the parent, they will receive a "zero" grade for the concert.

• Athletic Team Practices are NOT an excuse to miss a concert and the student will receive a "zero" grade.
