Our first show of the year: Little Shop of Horrors
Featuring around 60 students in the cast, crew and pit, MHS/MAA Performing Arts is pleased to present Little Shop of Horrors November 2-11.
Mushnik's Skid Row Florist, owned by Mr Mushnik (senior Max Young) is not doing well. Seymour (senior Jakey Sparks), Mr Mushnik's meek flower shop assistant, enjoys tinkering with strange plants when they shop isn't busy - which is most of the time. He also pines for co-worker Audrey (senior Ivy Jimenez), who is dating a no-good dentist (junior Dylan Guy). During a total eclipse, he discovers an unusual plant he names Audrey II, which requires a special kind of food. The growing plant attracts a great deal of business for the previously struggling flower shop. As the plant continues to grow and Seymour continues to find success because of it, he must come up with more food for the increasingly bloodthirsty plant.
This musical may be best suited for students 13 and up due to content.
LANGUAGE: Some of the characters use language that might be inappropriate to some.
DRUG USE: The dentist character (Orin) uses and abuses laughing gas (nitrous oxide) to add to his disturbed nature. This abuse is “campy” in nature and is meant to be seen or understood as a satirical, over-the-top rendition of a dentist.
VIOLENCE: Audrey II is a man-eating plant that demands to be fed. The plant is successful in “eating” some of the main characters as a means to satisfy his greed. In one scene, the remains of one of the characters is fed to the plant. All of the violence is “campy” in nature and not gory/scary. Also, the dentist is a pretty awful person and is abusive to Audrey, his girlfriend. This could potentially be troubling to some, but it is meant to serve as a dramatic device to make the dentist out as one of the true villains of the story
