UVS - Swing Club

UVS is the acronym for the United Veterans Service. The UVS was created by Helen Lengfeld, founder of Pacific Women's Golf Association, after WWII to organize volunteer groups across the country. In 1946, she started the Golf Swing Clubs. The first was in the Menlo Park Division of the Veterans Administration. The golf course was a pitch and putt course on the hospital grounds. The program offers physical therapy and gives the veterans an incentive to overcome their disabilities.

The Program Today

The Golf Swing Club has it tournaments at Moffett Field GC in Mountain View. There we play 9 holes of golf and have a separate 9-Hole putting tournament. These events host an average of 4080 participants (patients, volunteers and VA Staff).

Golf  Tournament: We average around 30 patients, men and women golfers of varying abilities, many with no experience to playing on their own. Limit 4 patients from any one program (HVRP, PTSD, WBRC, 1st Step, WTRP, Vets Respite care) Patients are paired with a Volunteer—each Patient must have a volunteer driver—VA sanctioned.  The volunteer plays the round with the patient and friendships are formed.  The patients arrive to the course with golf equipment which has been donated through the years.  The course length is shortened to 1,100 yards from 3,000 yards.

Putting Tournament: We average around 30+ putters. For golfers/non-golfers and Veteran’s Respite care.

We are just starting to see a few women veterans attend out programs. We encourage ladies to bring their friends to golf or putt.

Lunch: After the golf tournament all players, volunteers and staff return to the club house for a BBQ luncheon and an awards ceremony.  Having an opportunity to socialize and to talk about their game brings another layer of engagement to all of the participants and is a fun way to wrap up the event.

Funding: The program is funded through an annual donation from NCGA in the amount of $5000. as well as generous donations from member clubs and individuals. The Mather WGC annually donates the proceeds from its popular Lady Liberty Tournament.

We are ever so grateful for the donations we receive and we will continue to give back to the men and women who have served our country.
