Students attend school more often when their health care needs and safety risks get proper attention and management. Students achieve more success and graduate at higher rates when they can attend school regularly.

The Washington State Legislature created the School Nurse Corps (SNC) in 1999. The program gives children access to health care, especially those in small, rural school districts. Since 1999, SNC provides two essential services:

• Direct health care access: Registered nurses deliver direct care, health, education, and staff training in small, rural school districts

• Regional support network: School health consultation, professional development, mentoring, and resources from a nurse administrator/director in each of Washington's nine educational service districts

Without SNC, many children across Washington would lack access to a school nurse. Students with asthma, diabetes, and other life-threatening conditions now receive care from an RN who helps manage their health issues. SNC delivers life-saving interventions plus ongoing training and support.
