A quick video about what I'll need when I come to your school to present to your amazing second and fourth graders.
The following items will help to create a positive learning for students and help me stay on schedule. It is best if you are able to
1. Select one location for presentations and assemblies.
I have a bunch of interactive elements to set up for the presentations so having a single location is the easiest. If that is not possible please allow at least 15 minutes between presentations so that I can pack up, move, and set up again in the new location.
2. Have a 6-foot table available (near an electrical outlet) for presentation items.
I can set up on almost any kind of table but being near an outlet is important. If I cant set up within about 6 feet of an outlet I'd as that there be an extension cord available.
3. One teacher/para/school representative needs to be present for each class group to help with classroom management.
I use a behavior management game to help keep students on track but you know your students best and it is always helpful to have someone present who knows about the school and it's systems.
4. Please advise NCESD staff prior to the presentation if you have any students with sensory issue(s)
I make it a point to alert students of the loud noises from the electrical hazard diorama and am happy to wear a microphone or other aid if necessary.
The second graders get a presentation about energy change to help them learn how our hydro dams change the energy of the flowing Columbia river into the electricity we use every day.
This presentation helps build upon the following Speaking and Listening Common Core Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.2.1
Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 2 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.2.1.A
Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., gaining the floor in respectful ways, listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and texts under discussion).
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.2.1.B
Build on others' talk in conversations by linking their comments to the remarks of others.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.2.1.C
Ask for clarification and further explanation as needed about the topics and texts under discussion.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.2.2
Recount or describe key ideas or details from a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.2.3
Ask and answer questions about what a speaker says in order to clarify comprehension, gather additional information, or deepen understanding of a topic or issue.
The fourth graders learn about electric energy production at the hydro dams and important electricity safely rules.
This presentation helps support the following NGSS Performance Expectations:
4-PS3-2
Make observations to provide evidence that energy can be transferred from place to place by sound, light, heat, and electric currents.
4-PS3-4
Apply scientific ideas to design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another.
4-ESS3-1
Obtain and combine information to describe that energy and fuels are derived from natural resources and their uses affect the environment.
