Scaffolding for Varying Reading Levels

Shaker Junior High Teachers Melissa Kossor ( Grade 7 ELA) and Amanda Klopott ( ENL) have discovered and created a way to differentiate a "Whole-Class Novel" for their emerging and transitioning ENL students through the use of WEVIDEO, SCREENCASTIFY, and GOOGLE DOCS to scaffold for various reading levels.

The videos are posted on Google Classroom along with the questions . Melissa has found that the pairing of audio (reading of the book) with pictures, videos, and sounds has really helped our students with their understanding of the novel.

Amanda has even acted out the chapters with body language and expression in Flipped Videos ! Below are samples of the chapters using WEVIDEO , SCREENCASTIFY and GOOGLE DOCS.

Melissa also mentioned that the WEVIDEO PD class offered by Gary Cimorelli presented a comprehensive introduction to the program and provided a valuable resource for reaching learners.

This sample includes page numbers from the novel, pulls important vocabulary from the reading, and shows students how to look up words. It provides students with sentence frames and focuses in depth on selected chunks of text to help ELLs access the same content as mainstream students.
