What Is Speech-Language Therapy?

We work on developing your child's overall communication skills to age-appropriate levels.  Common skills that are targeted in our sessions include the following:

Language includes the understanding and use of vocabulary skills, forming sentences, using good listening skills, following directions, and understanding spoken language.

Articulation is the production of speech sounds.  Our ability to speak to each other and be understood is an essential communication skill.  When a child's speech is hard to understand because the sounds are not being produced correctly, this can affect social and academic progress.

Social communication is the way that we use our verbal and non-verbal language skills with those around us for many purposes, such as:  Greeting others;Informing others about information, our needs, and requests; Turn-Taking during conversation; Staying on a conversational topic; and using appropriate Body Language/Facial Expression

Fluency means speech that is clear, rhythmic, and smooth.  When a child's speech is disrupted, "bumpy", or is effortful, it is also known as 'stuttering'.
