Dr Kevin Grady is an expert on the history and development of Leeds and is well known as a lecturer and writer about the city. Grady has written many books and articles about Leeds and the West Riding; most notably co-author of The Illustrated History of Leeds, the first modern comprehensive study of the city’s history.
Grady trained as an economic historian at Leeds University, writing his PhD on the Provision of public buildings in the West Riding in the Georgian period. He spent many years as a lecturer in social and economic history at Exeter and Leeds universities and for 30 years was Director of Leeds Civic Trust, promoting high standards of architecture and planning in Leeds; protecting the city’s built heritage, and encouraging the improvement of the city’s amenities.
In 2014 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Leeds Beckett University in recognition of his ‘Service to the City of Leeds’, and in 2017 Leeds City Council presented him with the ‘Leeds Award’ in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the heritage and regeneration of the City of Leeds.
