Hello students and families!
Mr. Coleman
Upper School Humanities Teacher
Ascent Classical Academy of Northern Colorado
Hello! This is my first year teaching at Ascent, and I am beyond excited for the year ahead. All class information can be found under the "Classes" section of the website, and information to reach me or schedule tutoring is in the "Contact" section. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!
ABOUT ME
I am a native of southwest Michigan and moved to Colorado this past summer. I graduated from Hillsdale College with a Bachelor of Arts in History accompanied with a minor in Spanish. As a student at Hillsdale, I spent a semester studying in Washington D.C., interning at a historical research foundation in Georgetown while taking classes. After graduating, I worked as a substitute teacher in Michigan and found my passion for education and teaching. At our school, I teach the 12th grade Modern World History course, the 11th grade American History, 11th grade Political Philosophy, and one section of the 9th grade Logic & Rhetoric. Outside of the classroom, I love to read, play jazz trumpet, hike (I summited Mt. Elbert at the end of the summer!), and keep up with the Detroit Red Wings during hockey season (my apologies, Avalanche fans).
MY EDUCATION PHILOSOPHY
I believe education requires an aim, and, at Ascent, we aim towards equipping students with the ability to lead independent, responsible, and joyful lives. To achieve this goal, students must engage deeply with the humanities. Here, they will grapple with the ideas and principles that provide not only intellectual growth but moral development as well. By striving for excellence and overcoming adversity both within and beyond academics, students will leave Ascent habituated in lasting virtue and prepared to always see the good, true, and beautiful in our world.
Favorite periods of history:
Anything American or 20th century (and I'm lucky enough to teach both!)
Favorite president:
Calvin Coolidge in peacetime, George Washington in crisis.
What I'm reading:
Dostoevsky and McCarthy are my all-time favorites. I'm currently reading Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird in my free time.
