This activity used a Nearpod for students to interact. It also included:
Information and sample infographics from the American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture Food and Farm Facts book.
And a slightly dated, yet still good perspective on scope of agriculture, video called "Some Food for Thought."
Activity requirements are indicated in the presentation below. The website used for students to find information to create the infographic is https://www.agfoundation.org/common-questions/view/category/ag-lifestyle
The first activity sets up foundational knowledge of plant parts and function using a Nearpod lesson infused with Flocabuary. You can get the information but not the experience below.
Note: Students who indicated to the teacher that they did not have seeds or a closeable plastic sandwich bag in the week prior to this activity were mailed supplies to conduct the lab. Evidence of why communication is key.
The second lesson of the Plant Science Remote Learning unit uses a Nearpod lesson to explore concepts related to seed dispersal and factors influencing germination in preparation for wrapping up the lab set up in Activity 2. You can find a similiar lesson below.
With roughly a week of the seed germination lab done, students check in with a video update. Tips for the camera shy are provided in the Google Classroom assignment overview.
After letting their seeds have two weeks to germinate, students evaluated the progress of their seeds and the accuracy of predictions. They connected concepts learned in Activity 4: Seed Dispersal and Germination to the performance of their own seeds.
Here are some of our student's results.
Students are learning through a Nearpod. However, you can see the terms they are getting familiar with in this Prezi.
This is a lesson I really wish we were experiencing together in class as the discussion and dialogue we have during this time truly helps to broaden the spectrum of cultural practices and beliefs related to animals as well as different dietary preferences. The last full week of Agriscience 7 provides students to reflect on what they have learned and make connections between their learning and their lives.
