About the University of North Bengal (NBU)
The University of North Bengal, since its inception in 1962, has been fulfilling the objectives of imparting higher education and research to the people of this socio-economically backward area of the country. With the global advancement and requirements in the arena of higher education and research, the University shouldered the responsibility of disseminating knowledge by the judicious expansion of its role in advanced, non-conventional, applied and job-oriented fields keeping the quality of education with global standards at low cost. The University of North Bengal campus covers an area of nearly 315.99 acres of land at the foothills of the high Himalayas in close proximity to vast plains around it with a fascinating glimpse of the Kanchenjunga peak, tea gardens and forest cover.
About the Department of Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics came into existence in 1962 to develop a center for excellence in North Bengal in Mathematical Sciences and Applications and provide facilities for training, study, and research in these areas. Pioneering research contributions have come from the faculty members in Real and Complex Analysis, Topology, Functional Analysis, Number Theory, Algebra, Fuzzy Mathematics, Cosmology, Biofluid Mechanics, Theoretical and Computational Biomechanics, and Dynamical Systems.
About the Calcutta Mathematical Society
Calcutta Mathematical Society was established on 6 September 1908 under the stewardship of Sir Asutosh Mookerjee, the then Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University. He was the founder president of the Society, and was assisted by Sir Gurudas Banerjee, Prof. C. E. Cullis and Prof. Gauri Sankar Dey as Vice Presidents and Prof. Phanindra Lal Ganguly as the Founder Secretary of the organization. Over more than the last 100 years, the Society has fostered teaching and research of theoretical and applied mathematical sciences through several pedagogic and technical activities. The main academic activities of the Society can broadly be classified under the following three heads: Memorial Lectures, Special Lectures and Regular Seminars and Symposiums. The Memorial Lectures are organized by the Society every year in honor of great academics who were once associates and patrons of the organization. All along, the Calcutta Mathematical Society has been able to create a distinct impression in the mind of the elite of the society, and we hope it will continue to do so forever.
