Seduction: 25cm x 25cm x 40cm Medium: Clay, foam head, nails, acrylic
I explore the idea of fasting in Christianity as one way to sacrifice. The idea of fasting in Christianity is abstaining from food, drink, sleep or sex to focus on a period of spiritual growth. Specifically, Christians humbly deny something of the flesh to glorify God and enhance their spirit. The followers sacrifice their desire in order to practice their beliefs. I am planning to utilize foam, clay, acrylic, and cardboard as the materials for this project.
Behind the Perfect 30cm x 30cm x 55cmMedium: Wire, metal tubes, paper mache, foil paper, stockings
I explore how women, in order to lose weight cut off a rib or a small portion of the stomach. Nowadays, because people are crazy about beauty and the “perfect body shape”, lots of women choose the wrong way to lose weight, and to a large extent hurt their own body. Beauty should be identity, independence, and confidence. Any kind of appearance should not be a burden toward women. For this project, I will use iron wire, silk, mache as materials.
How far I will go? 64cm x 140cmMedium: charcoal, liner kraft paper
I explore how women sacrifice themselves for their family and give up on careers. Nowadays in some countries, when women marry a man, they still ask to stay home and do the housework rather than a job. It is also a stereotype in society, women are hard to get a job because the company assumes when you have a baby you will quit. This piece will focus on the theme that women are “kidnapped” by the stereotype of society to sacrifice their right to work and independence.
Exchange 58.24cm x 127 cmMedium: Digital print
I explore the idea of substitutionary sacrifice, which is also called Ebo Irapad in Yoruba culture. The Yoruba will use sheep as a substitute and by rubbing men, misfortune and sickness are transferred to sheep. I will connect this idea with some elements like blood, sheep, skin disease, for the purpose of showing the relationship between people and animals and disease.
The lamb of life 127cm x 58.24cmMedium: Digital print
This piece focuses on a social phenomenon today. I will explore how people tend to value themselves more than anything. As a result, they focus on enriching themselves both in monetary terms and psychologically. They sacrifice their beliefs, real connections, and morals. Self-service becomes the norm. I link this to the symbol of goat and lamb, which is a common animal used as a sacrifice in many cultural beliefs and countries such as in China, Korea, Catholicism
Honor? 50cm x 120cmMedium: Charcoal, liner kraft paper
I explore the idea of people sacrificing their ego for what they believe in and contribute to what they believe in. By expressing the idea, I include a votive sacrifice in Yoruba culture and Seppuku in Japanese culture. Votive sacrifice in Yoruba culture is called “Ebo Eje”, which means ritually offering animal blood for the purpose of expressing gratitude to the gods and previous vows. It is interesting to combine with the idea about Seppuku when the samurai die to follow their leader
Cultural ashes rebirth 90cm x 90cm x 90cmMedium: Gypsum, plants, plastic foam, heat gun
I explore the idea of the rebirth of culture. In April 2019, the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris succumbed to natural fires and the Kyoto Animation Studio endured an arson attack in July. Whether man-made or natural, the unified representation of flame has caused great damage to both material and spiritual culture. In these situations, people are forced to sacrifice whether their culture or memories.
Burn to die 127cm x 58.24cmMedium: Digital print, cardboard, fake candle
I explore book burning. From ancient times until now, the sacrifice of knowledge has always been used as a strong way to dominate the whole country. The monarch used this way to control people’s ideology and their thoughts. It happens in many different cultures, time periods and all over the world, but the only thing that does not change is knowledge has been always sacrificed.
