The Robert H. Waters Chapter of the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) at the University of Miami School of Law (UM Law) was founded in 1971. Harold Long was the second Black law student at UM after serving as the President of the Black Student Union during his undergraduate education. The first BLSA President was George Knox, who was the third Black law student at UM. Mr. Knox began a rich history of advocacy for Black law students by presenting demands to faculty and administration at the law school on behalf of BLSA.
Other notable alumni of UM Law include: H.T. Smith, Tiffani Lee, Deborah Enix-Ross, The Honorable Dean Barrow, James W. Crawford III, Perry Thurston, and Jaret L. Davis.

Welcome to the Robert H. Waters Chapter of the National Black Law Student Association at the University of Miami School of Law. It is my honor to serve as President, and lead our Executive Board and Chapter during the 2021-2022 academic year.
Throughout my first year of law school, BLSA provided the support I needed to overcome numerous challenges and provided many of my best moments. After seeing how strong a community could be in law school, I was inspired to serve this organization and give back to my peers.
Last year, I had the privilege of serving as Vice President and ensured that BLSA continued to support 1Ls and maintain our strong community during a year of remote learning and virtual activities. In general, law school can be an arduous process, but the pandemic reminded us of the importance of grace and flexibility. This year, as we anticipate a modified return to normalcy, it is my hope that we implement the lessons learned from the pandemic.
The Executive Board is working diligently to ensure that Black law students continue to feel supported within our community. We hope to take advantage of virtual resources in addition to our traditional means of community building. Our core pillars—Scholarship, Service, Skills, and Solidarity—drive our plans and actions this year. It will be an exciting year, and we look forward to sharing it all with you.
I would like to extend deep gratitude to our faculty advisor, Dean Cox, for her continued support. Dean Cox goes above and beyond to ensure that Black students are supported and successful at Miami Law. I can confidently say that many of our current students and alumni would not be where we are today without her devotion and guidance. I would also like to thank our alumni for their continued support. Our alumni have shown an unmatched level of involvement and willingness to give back, which sets the example for us to uplift those who follow, and I cannot thank them enough. Their success continues to inspire us all.
Lastly, I would like to extend a warm welcome to prospective Black law students. If you decide that Miami Law is the perfect place for your law school experience, you already have a community in BLSA. Incoming law students—congratulations on your acceptance into the University of Miami School of Law, and welcome to BLSA. We hope that our events, updates, and experiences serve as an inspiration to succeed and thrive in this next chapter of your life.
If you have any questions or would like to schedule a meeting with a current BLSA member, please contact us at umiami@nblsa.org.
