My name is Katie Carson and I'm a teacher at Nazareth Area Middle School. I will be running a breast cancer t-shirt fundraiser at the middle school this year. If you’d like to order t-shirts, your order must be received by Friday, October 23rd at the end of the school day (2:15). ALL orders will be distributed in students’ Activity Periods. Cyber students may pick up their shirts in the main office. Checks can be made payable to NAMS PTSA.

As a breast cancer survivor, I’ve decided to donate the funds from the t-shirt sale to METAvivor. Their website states, “Breast cancer fundraisers are everywhere, but most of the money raised goes toward breast cancer prevention and early detection efforts. Very little of it, only 2-3%, is dedicated toward research for Stage IV, metastatic breast cancer. METAvivor is the only organization that solely funds MBC research through a scientific peer review process. 100% of all donations go into MBC-specific research grants.”

“Each year, 200,000 Americans are diagnosed with breast cancer. Six to ten percent of these diagnoses are metastatic, or stage 4. Another 30% progress from stages 0, 1, 2 and 3 to develop stage 4– maybe immediately, maybe 30 years down the line. Science has very few answers to the reason why cancer metastasizes and we don't yet have an effective treatment to arrest metastatic growth. What we do know is that a diagnosis of Stage 4 breast cancer is not considered survivable and that almost 40,000 men and women die of it each year. This is what METAvivor is fighting to change.”

This charity is important to me because 100% of all donations actually go towards research in curing Stage 4 Breast Cancer and once we’re able to cure stage 4 cancer, all earlier stages will have their cure as well. Last year, we were able to donate $1,400 to METAvivor.
