3rd and 4th grade students worked with local and nationally-recognized artist, Shawn Dunwoody, to create new murals for our school cafeteria.
Students learned about the art of storytelling and authorship from local author, Leslie C Youngblood. After participating in a writing workshop with Youngblood, students began creating their own stories, inspired by individual experiences, cultural traditions, memories, and goals. After writing our stories, students learned how to visually communicate these stories through art. Using colored pencils, oil pastels, watercolor paint, collage, and more, students developed 9-panel graphic novels which were published and placed in our school Library for the community to enjoy!
Students learned about different careers, and the ways in which your career can influence your fashion choices. After learning about different materials, textile color theory, and researching their own job interests, students created vision boards to inspire their future fashion designs. Designers ultimately created wearable fashion designs that represent their future career. Designers participated in a school-wide fashion show to exhibit their final garments!
Students learned about the art of social justice Design, and how to create a successful image to visually communicate a concept. Students learned about artistic activism and ways artists can advocate for a particular cause. After studying social justice and choosing their own social justice cause, students created a logo design to advocate for a topic that is important to them, ultimately mailing their work to local legislatures in hopes of making a change for good.
