Pūlama is a Unified Hawaiian Language and Cultural Event where the life of our language thrives. Through this event we hope to show the world that we are not just a school but a united and growing movement towards normalizing once again the language of our ancestors. Through the collaborative efforts of students, families, teachers, and staff from Pūnana Leo, Nāwahīokalaniʻōpu, and Ka Haka ʻUla o Keʻelikōlani, we are able to showcase to our community and to the world, the life of our thriving language and culture and most importantly, our mauli ola Hawaiʻi.

Pūlama usually consists of five key parts in order to make our event successful which are as follows; student showcase, farmers market, keiki games put together by the Pūnana Leo, food sales, and pop up market of local vendors. These aspects of our event work together with the collaborative efforts of all ʻohana members of our Hawaiian language programs.

Our Pūlama program always begins with our student showcase where hula, mele, and moʻolelo are performed by students from Pūnana Leo, Nāwahīokalaniʻōpuʻu, and Ka Haka ʻUla o Keʻelikōlani. Through our hōʻikeʻike, our students showcase the life of our language, our culture, lessons learned, as well as our unity as an aukahi hoʻōla ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi.

Hiʻipēpē, Pūnana Leo, and Nāwahī use our 6.5 acre māla as a classroom to extend the teaching outdoors. All students participate in active learning in our garden. The products, produce, and native Hawaiian plants created and grown by the keiki become a part of Pūlama Mauli Ola. The ultimate goal of this portion of our event is to display what the students create in our māla and to teach the community about each item. Everything featured is student-centered and student-created. The naʻau (inner being), lolo (brain), and ʻōpū (stomach) will experience the ʻono of our ʻāina while attending this portion of Pūlama Mauli Ola.

The most popular activities for the keiki at Pūlama Mauli Ola are the keiki games. They are designed and constructed by families and staff of Pūnana Leo with a focus on culture and language. These games are made to enrich the experiences of students who ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi or speak Hawaiian and to teach the keiki and community who are not familiar with our mother tongue about ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi.

The students and families participate in the cultural experience of gathering, preparing, and cooking in our imu to learn the importance of teaching and sharing this traditional knowledge of our ancestors. Students and their families make the foods available at Pūlama Mauli Ola. They follow specific protocols so the younger generation can learn these practices and continue them in their daily lives at home. Another protocol is learning and practicing the proper words and behaviors while preparing food for the imu. Therefore, namunamu or grumbling is not allowed. The food will be ʻono if the people making it are pono or just in their work. At Pūlama Mauli Ola we provide an opportunity to participate in this activity to perpetuate the practices and culture of our Hawaiian people.
