VDR Review

It is a very good tool to verify that company’s SMS for safe navigation is implemented.

It is felt that during external or internal audits the entire bridge team is at its heightened state of alert, and this may not depict the normal state of navigation on the bridge of a ship.

Remote VDR and Navigation reviews have become more relevant in the times of travel restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. OCIMF has also begun remote SIRE inspections.

Routine VDR Review

VDR reviews are ideally undertaken for a passage of a vessel through Confined waters, high traffic density areas, or berthing for periods up to 12 hours of analysis

VDR Review for Navigation Incident

In case of a Navigation related incident such as collision, alleged collision, dragging anchor, allision, grounding, or coming hard on to a berth while berthing or fender damage etc. the VDR review can help assess the liability and provide valuable evidence to the team of lawyers to defend the vessel’s interests. Close up reports and preparation of movies from still pictures of Radar and or ECDIS derived from VDR data are easy to appraise the situation keeping in view the traffic conditions in the vicinity which are not displayed in a playback from ECDIS where the only the vessel’s position may be observed.

VDR Snap Review

This is a quick review of a short period of navigation such as pre- arrival congested waters preparation, pre- arrival port preparation, pre- departure port etc. This is helpful to verify compliance with company procedure.
