Wellfleet Elementary School
To celebrate the Presidents’ Day holiday and provide support to the Wellfleet community, the WES Spirit Committee planned “Pennies for Presidents Day”! Students were encouraged to bring in pennies during the week of February 8th through 12th. A large container made the rounds to every classroom each morning so students could add their pennies. The container was on display in the Main Office so everyone can see the pennies “adding up” during the week.
At the end of the week, the pennies were counted and all donations will be given to “Common Table,” a local non-profit organization founded by Trudy Vermehren, owner of The Fox & Crow, and Bruce Bierhans, a local attorney. In March of 2020, Trudy and Bruce embarked on a pandemic-related mission to help feed those in need in our community, no questions asked. Over 16,000 meals were distributed in 2020. They continue to serve 50-80 people a day Monday-Friday. All meals are delivered to reduce the need for recipients to travel and to help keep them safe.
The WES staff felt that a school community project such as this would help bring us together during a time when we are asked to be socially distant from one another.
