Who we are: We are a group of applied linguists and educators in the English Department at Northern Arizona University, specialized in English pronunciation.
What we do: We provide free one-on-one tutoring sessions targeting English pronunciation. Our goal is not necessarily to help you sound like a native English speaker, but rather to help you achieve comprehensible and intelligible speech.
At the Global Communication Center, we focus on the following aspects of English pronunciation:
Word stress (i.e., how we stress different parts of a word)
Prominence (i.e., how we stress different words in a sentence)
Rhythm (i.e., how we stress and unstress different words in our speech)
Fluency (i.e., speech rate and pause-related features)
Intonation (i.e., the ups and downs of our pitch)
Vowels and Consonants
Prepare your visits: Each visit is around 30 minutes. During each visit, you will watch 1-2 instructional videos (~5 minutes each), discuss the concepts with the tutor, and do targeted communicative practice with the tutor. For first-time visitor, you will complete a diagnostic test by reading aloud two scripts to help us understand how to best support you. If you do not show up at a scheduled appointment, you will not be allowed to schedule another one within the month; if you do not show up at two scheduled appointments, you will not be able to schedule another one within the semester.
