This study confirms how next-generation sequencing approaches on historical (museum) material surmount the limits of Sanger sequencing and facilitate pivotal benchmarks in the sponge (and other organismal) systematics and phylogenetics.
This study used “Keratose” sponges as model taxa. This is a paraphyletic group of Demospongiae without a mineral skeleton. Keratose refers traditionally to sponges of the orders Dictyoceratida and Dendrocerarida (= Subclass Keratosa) but also to the order Verongiida of Subclass Verongimorpha.
