11th World Sponge Conference in Leiden

On 10-14 October 2022, the World Sponge Conference will be held for sponge researchers worldwide. The event every 3-4 years is sponsored and jointly partnered by educational/research institutions in the Netherlands, i.e., the Naturalis Biodiversity Center, University of Amsterdam, Universiteit Leiden, and Wageningen University & Research. Five topics will become the main focus of scientific discussion at the conference, i.e., 1) species and populations, 2) ecosystem functions and services, 3) microbial ecology, 4) organismal, cell, and molecular biology, and 5) applied science.

Previously, the 10th World Sponge Conference was held almost 5 years ago on June 2017, in Galway City, Ireland. The conference was attended by at least 300 participants from various topics and study areas around the world (see information). The postponement of this scientific conference until 2022 was due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which should have been planned to held in Bali for 2020 or 2021. However, after being considered by the organizing committee, the 11th conference was decided to be held in Leiden City, the Netherlands.

The 11th World Sponge Conference, this year will be held at the Museum of Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Leiden, and will feature keynote speakers such as Dr. Ana Riesgo, Dr. Scott Nichols, Prof. Shirley Pomponi, Dr. Paco Cardenas, and Prof. Torsten Thomas. Pada Tanggal 10-14 Oktober 2022 mendatang akan digelar konferensi ilmiah internasional bagi para peneliti hewan porifera di seluruh dunia. Event setiap 3-4 tahun sekali tersebut disponsori dan rekanan bersama oleh institusi-institusi pendidikan/penelitian di Belanda yaitu Naturalis Biodiversity Center, University of Amsterdam, Universiteit Leiden, dan Wageningen University & Research. Terdapat lima topik yang akan menjadi fokus utama diskusi ilmiah dalam konferensi tersebut yaitu 1) species and populations, 2) ecosystem function and services, 3) microbial ecology, 4) organismal, cell, and molucular biology, dan 5) applied science.

Sebelumnya, 10th World Sponge Conference telah dilaksanakan hampir 5 tahun yang lalu yaitu bulan Juni 2017 di Kota Galway, Irlandia. Pertemuan tersebut setidaknya dihadiri oleh 300 partisipan dari berbagai topik dan wilayah kajian dibelahan dunia (lihat informasinya). Penundaan konferensi ilmiah ini hingga tahun 2022 terjadi karena adanya pandemi covid-19, yang mana seharusnya direncanakan pelaksanaanya di Bali pada Tahun 2020 atau 2021 yang lalu. Namun, setelah dipertimbangkan oleh komite pelaksanaan konferensi ke-11 ini diputuskan dilaksanakan di Kota Leiden, Belanda.

11th World Sponge Conference kali ini akan dilaksanakan di Museum Naturalis Biodiversity Center, leiden dan menghadirkan pembicara kunci seperti Dr. Ana Riesgo, Dr. Scott Nichols, Prof. Shirley Pomponi, Dr. Paco Cardenas, dan Prof. Torsten Thomas.
