Essential Question: What makes a great leader?

Introduction: As in Mesopotamia, Egyptian civilization developed along a river valley. The annual flooding of the Nile River provided water and fertile soil that allowed farmers to produce a food surplus. This surplus supported a complex society made up of slaves, farmers, artisans, merchants, soldiers, and priests, topped by a powerful monarch known as a pharaoh. Through trade and conquest, Egyptian civilization spread its influence through parts of Africa, Asia, and the Mediterranean world.
