This project is called Kehinde Wiley Inspired Self Portrait and I completed it in 7th grade expressions. This project introduced the artist Kehinde Wiley and I learned about how he made portraits of everyday people of color. To create my self portrait I started with taking a picture, then uploading a flower motif to a blank page, then uploading the picture to the page and cropping out the motif in places that I didn't want to cover my picture. This project connects best with the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Pillar Pillar because I engaged in the photoshoot and portrait creation in a curious, positive, and non-judgmental manner in the style of Kehinde Wiley that showcases artwork of people with diverse identities and histories. For example, I realize that museums that showcase artwork from diverse artists can create an inclusive space for viewers of all ethnic backgrounds. As a result, my growth in this pillar has progressed because I learned about an artist who also strives for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
I completed the Transformations Logo Project in 8th Grade Math. For this project, I created a logo on a cause. I chose for my cause to the the LGBTQ+ community. Then, I mapped out where my logo would go on a coordinate grid, annotating its transformations to create the design. After that, I then finalized my design, coloring it. This project connects to the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Pillar because I engaged in a non judgemental way to create a logo for a diverse community. For an example, I curiously looked up symbols of the LGBT community and decided that I would do a rainbow, a common logo used to show pride in the community. My logo connects to the cause because it has a known symbol of the LGBT community, and it has the saying “Love is love” which is the main idea that the whole LGBT community is based on. This Project helped me master this Pillar because I positively and non-judgmentally took part in creating a logo for a community. When first entered Leading Edge, I wasn't very familiar with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. I eventually learned the meaning of this Pillar through a couple projects, which was to look at things like ethnicity, orientation, or identity non-judgmentally, and engage in a positive and curious manner.
