Science

On this page, you will find information about our science class this year!

Classroom Expectations

I expect each and every student to come to class ready to learn. In fifth grade we are responsible for completing work, asking for help when we need it, having materials ready, and willingness to participate in class. I am here to help you!

Classroom Materials

Please review the 5th Grade Supply List for a larger list of supplies needed in all of your classes.

Homework

Homework will be given on an as needed basis. Sometimes it will be review and/or reinforcement of information we learn in class. It is your responsibility to complete your homework when it is due. Homework will be graded at random for participation only, never for accuracy. Half credit will be given for late homework. Remember, homework is given to help you to be successful in class!

Grades

All graded assignments will fall under three categories: assessments, classwork, and independent work.

Missing Work

If you are absent, you are responsible for making up all the work you missed. This should happen as soon as possible so you do not feel behind in class.

If you are absent you should:

What will we learn this year in science?

Hydrosphere

What is the water cycle? How do humans impact (both positive and negative) the water cycle? What can we do to protect the water we have on Earth?

How and why does water change from being a solid to a liquid? From a liquid to a gas? From a liquid to a solid?

Can Earth's Water be created or destroyed forever?

Ecosystems

What is an ecosystem? What are some examples of ecosystems?

What types of organisms are in an ecosystem and how do they interact? What is a food web?

What is photosynthesis and why is it so important?

How can humans impact their ecosystem? What can humans do to protect ecosystems?

How can humans make better decisions about how to exist in an ecosystem that doesn't hurt other organisms or the land?

Chemistry

What do we mean when we say something is "matter"?

How and why do scientists use specific words like "compound", "mixture", and "solution" to describe matter?

What is a chemical reaction and how do we know when one is happening?

Astronomy:

Why do the Sun, Moon, and Stars appear to move across the sky?

What is a Moon "phase" and why does the Moon seem to change shape?

How does the Sun affect Earth? How does the Moon affect Earth?
