The RELC Summit uses an "Open Space" system to conduct the conference sessions. On Saturday evening, all participants come together to collectively suggest and select session topics. Summit organizers then create a session schedule for the following two days. Given this system, we invite you to bring management-level and program topics to the Summit to suggest as sessions.
All sessions have a discussion-based format so that everyone can contribute ideas and experiences. If you suggest a topic, you will be asked to facilitate the discussion by introducing the topic and creating a discussion among the participants.
The role of the facilitator is to create fair opportunities for sharing, keep the discussions on track, and make sure everyone has the opportunity to participate. Facilitated discussions are not presentations followed by questions and answers, nor the place where the facilitator is expected to answer all of the questions. Facilitated discussions are an advantage to the facilitator because the discussion requires less formal preparation, and the facilitator does not need to be perceived as the expert.
This system allows you to co-create your RELC Summit experience, and provides the opportunity for you to be an active participant rather than a passive listener. This is also an excellent way for you to get to know your peers and how similar organizations work.
We share these principles for meaningful participation in Open Space sessions:
Whatever happens is the only thing that could happen. Don’t worry about what should have happened.
Whoever shows up are the right people to be there. There is always wisdom in the room.
Whenever it starts is the right time.
When it’s over, it’s over! If you finish early, take the time to find a quiet place to reflect, take a nap, or go for a walk with a new friend.
Lastly, we apply the Law of Mobility to these sessions — this law states that if you find yourself in a situation where you are neither learning anything or contributing anything, you are responsible for moving to another place, for example to another session.
The open exchange of ideas and the freedom of thought and expression are central to the aims and goals of ANCA. These require an environment that recognizes the inherent worth of every person and group; that fosters dignity, understanding and mutual respect; and that embraces diversity. For these reasons, ANCA is dedicated to providing a harassment-free RELC Summit experience. Summit participants violating these standards may be asked to leave, at the discretion of the ANCA Board and Summit organizers.
