NCHS Cheerleaders Qualify for ICCA State

The NCHS cheerleading squad qualified for the Illinois Cheerleading Coaches Association state championships. Nashville placed fourth out of 12 teams in the small varsity division and scored above a 75.00 during the ICCA Qualifier at Pinckneyville on Sunday, December 10, 2023, to qualify. ICCA state is January 6 - 7, 2024, at the Bank of Springfield Center in Springfield.  The team competed on Saturday as well against eight teams and also qualified for state that day.  Their versatility and adaptability as a squad was definitely tested this weekend as they had to change their routine just 48 hours before Saturday's competition due to an unfortunate injury Coach Evans shared.  But the NCHS cheerleaders didn't let that challenge stop them.  Congratulations on your ICCA State bid.

Varsity Football Beats Quincy Notre Dame and Heads to Third Round of Playoffs

The long three hour drive to Quincy to face the Quincy Notre Dame Raiders didn't negatively impact the Hornets on Saturday, November 4th as they won the game 27 - 18.  The Hornets grabbed the lead in the first quarter and never let upThe Hornet defense was again strong allowing just 27 yards rushing by the Raiders.  Offensively, the Hornets were the entire package: accurate throws by Malawy, strong runs by Miller, and increased yardage by multiple Hornet receivers. With this win, the Hornets move to 8 - 3 on the season and secured a home field third-round playoff game against Athens High School on Saturday, November 11 at 1:00 p.m.

IHSA State Cross Country Experience

The IHSA Class 1A State Cross Country Experience on Saturday, November 4, was a wonderfully rewarding and motivating experience for NCHS runners Adi Wilson and Evan Eberhart.  Coach Olson reflected: "Adi and Evan are both such strong, dedicated runners.  They put in so many hours of work throughout this entire season, preparing for Saturday, and they were both so excited and READY to run!"  She continued: "One thought that kept reverberating through my mind was how well Southern Illinois teams ran at State this year.  In both the boys and the girls races, So IL teams made a BIG impact!  And Evan and Adi were running against those runners at EVERY race!  The weather was perfect, the kids were so great, and the experience was fantastic!  Both Evan and Adi are already planning what they need to work on to not only get back to State next year, but to improve on their running and their times!"  Coach Olson shared her thoughts about running in general as well: "I absolutely love to see the joy of running, and there's no better place to find it than at the State competition at Detweiler.  While other students and even other athletes think of three miles as an incredible distance to run, these athletes simply get it done and make it look easy in the process.  It's difficult to explain what running is like to a person who doesn't run or a person who doesn't run distance--running is relief, running is joy, running is pounding out one's frustrations, running is working all of the problems out before coming into contact with others, running is LIFE!  Some days you have good runs; some days you have bad runs, but ANY day you *get* to run is truly a blessing and should never be taken for granted!  When I was in high school, someone told me I should run, and I actually laughed in that person's face.  If I could time-travel, I'd go tell Little Olson to get out there and do it!  There is absolutely nothing that compares to a new PR that you've been working toward for days or weeks!  They talk about runner's high--that's a real thing.  Our bodies LOVE to move and be active!   There are many sports that one will have to give up some day.  You don't see many fifty-year olds and sixty-year olds out there tackling people in football or spiking volleyballs over the net, but you DO see plenty of people running into their old age.  Running is a sport you can enter in your youth and continue throughout your entire life!  I wish more people would try running!  It's simply the GREATEST!"  Sounds like Coach Olson is recruiting, NCHS athletes.  If you haven't considered running before, talk to her.  Cross Country is a fabulous sport that benefits and challenges an individual mentally and physically and promotes a tremendous team camaraderie.

Adi shared, "My state experience was one to remember. I think I can speak for all of us when I say me, Aubrey, Silas, and Evan had a blast this weekend. Between our bus ride, Mrs. Olson, and just hanging out, I think we all came out with abs from laughing so hard. The running itself was a great experience and overall just fun. It makes racing a lot easier when there is not so much pressure on you. I will say it was a little overwhelming with the large amount of runners and fans. Overall, I loved my state experience and wouldn't change anything about it. I am very grateful for this season and the opportunities that came with it, and hope to make it back next year!"

A Cross Country State experience wouldn't be the same without a night of carb loading at Avanti's Italian Restaurant.  Pictured from left to right: Silas Hill, Adi Wilson, Aubrey Fernandez, and Evan Eberhart

Evan shared, "I would like to say that it was an extremely fun time that Silas, Adi, Aubrey, and I all got to experience.  State is a completely different animal because the start is so much faster than any other race all year and people are constantly interchanging places, so it is always important to stay focused on what you are trying to achieve in YOUR race. It was awesome to finish off my Junior season with a PR, but definitely makes me hungry to push as far to the top as possible to finish off my high school cross country career strong."

Two NCHS Cross Country Runners Qualify for State

Saturday, October 28 was not a beautiful weather morning for a run, but that didn't stop the Hornet Cross Country boys and girls teams from giving it their all at the IHSA Sectional Meet in Benton.  Coach Olson reported that the boys team placed 17th with a score of 456. The top finisher for the Hornets was Evan Eberhart who finished 16th overall with a time of 16:10.  Other top Hornet runners were Silas Hill (65), Noah Szopinski (122), Zeke Kinder (148), Marcus Bartolotta (160), and Jacob McBride (161). The girls team placed 12th with a score of 350.  The top finisher for the Hornettes was Adi Wilson who finished 25th overall with a time of 19:49.  Other top Hornette runners were Aubrey Fernandez (68), Jessie Malone (71), Josie Lupachini (120), and Alissa Tyler (121). Coach Olson shared, "I am so proud of each and every runner! They ran through a literal downpour today and DIDN’T let it stop them!!"  Adi and Evan will complete in Class 1A Cross Country State on Saturday, November 4, at Detweiller Park in Peoria with the top Class 1A cross country runners from throughout the state.  Adi will run at 9:00 a.m., and Evan will run at 10:00 a.m.

Evan Eberhart qualified for ISHA State as an individual.  Evan shared, "I am extremely excited to go run at Detweiller Park for the first time in my running career, and I'm even more excited to be able to bring Silas along with me.  He has been super helpful and the most supportive teammate over the last few seasons as he's been my main training partner.  I also would like to say that it has been a challenging and difficult stretch, but the miles over the last year have greatly benefited this season."

"Never underestimate the heart of a champion."

Adi Wilson qualified for IHSA State as an individual.  Adi shared, "My sectional experience was way different than any other race I have run.  I didn't know what to expect, as it started raining minutes before the gun was fired.  For me, it was my best race of the season, as I PRed by 30 seconds with a new best time of 19:49!  On the other hand, running the race was not the most enjoyable.  Some people would think that running in the rain sounds fun. But, when you are running as hard as you can while hardly being able to breathe, see, and staying on your own two feet, it is not fun. I want to celebrate not only my teammate and I for making it to state, but all of the runners who are going to state, and those who participated in our sectional run."

Junior Evan Eberhart was asked to share his thoughts about the upcoming cross country sectional.  He wrote: "I would definitely say it's exciting for the seniors to be able to possibly run their last high school cross country race at Benton just because it's such a fast course for people to push themselves to a PR.  It is also exciting to know that a couple of the runners have a good shot at qualifying for state, so going into the race we will be locked in, ready to hurt, and ready to push ourselves to the point of falling across the line in exhaustion."

Evie Reams competed in the IHSA Tennis Sectional on October 13. She was the only Freshmen in the IA Carbondale Sectional; the majority of the 17 competitors were Seniors. Evie shared, "This year was more just seeing what It would be like and getting all the nerves out.  I was so lucky to compete in Sectionals; tennis is my favorite sport. I want to play tennis in college. In my match I played the number three seed, she was a senior. The wind was very rough, and I unfortunately lost, but I can't wait to come back next year and hopefully be a state champion."

Congratulations on a successful first season, Evie, and we will be watching in the years to come!

Varsity Hornet Football Secures a Playoff Spot

The Hornets have been challenged the last few weeks facing off against conference foes.  The Hornets fell to Benton on Friday 9/29 in a close back and forth, hard-fought game that ended with the Rangers winning 42 - 38.  The following Friday 10/6 was an easy win as the Hornets decimated the rival Pinckneyville Panthers 48 - 7.  But the competition returned when the Hornets traveled last Friday 10/13 to DuQuoin to face the 7 - 0 Indians.  It wasn't the Hornets' game as they came up way short losing 55 - 24.  The Hornets have been tested for certain, but that's good as they move into their final game against the Shelbyville Tigers on Senior Night, October 20.  The Hornets want to have faced challenges going into this game and the playoff gameS to follow.

Hornette Volleyball: A Force On the Courts

The Varsity Hornettes are an impressive 26 - 6 after coming off some difficult match ups last week.  On Tuesday, October 10, they took down the Pinckneyville Panthers tying them in the conference with each team with an 8 - 1 record.  It was a battle against the Panthers led by "senior libero Ella Wesselmann [who] was simply spectacular, making a variety of athletic saves much like a hockey or soccer goalie from awkward positions on the back line," shared John Homan with The Southern Illinoisan.  In the two set game, Wesselman had a team-high 17 defensive digs.  Homan reported as well that "Nashville was led in kills by Carly Kasten with six; Emma Behrmann, Samantha Brinkmann, and Scarlet Konkel each recorded four; Behrmann led in blocks with three and Belle Schmale had two; and Konkel was tops in assists with twelve and Aubrey Rhine added nine."

The Hornettes met some tough competition at the Freeburg Monster Mash on Saturday, October 14 placing third in the tournament with two wins against Benton and Waterloo and a loss to Freeburg.

The team placed second in the Varsity Triad Tournament on Saturday, September 30 falling to Glenwood-Chatham in the Championship.   Emma Behrmann and Scarlet Konkel were selected to the All - Tournament Team.

Parker Renken Places Sixth at Golf State

Congratulations, Parker, on your sixth place finish at IHSA State.  Coach Guest shared that "Parker is the only boy NCHS golfer to be a two time All State golfer."  He continued, "Parker really performed well at the state tournament.  This weather on Friday was extremely brutal with rain, 45 mph wind gusts, and cold.  To battle those conditions and shoot only 4 over was a testament to his toughness. Then, he had a really solid round to close out his career on Saturday.  Parker is just an amazing talent.  I am super proud of him and everything he has accomplished in his career at Nashville."

Parker Renken shared about his experience: "Getting to State and placing was my biggest goal that I accomplished this year.  The weather was really bad this year, and I had my ups and downs, but I battled the wind and rain the first day.  The second day was a lot nicer, but it was still really cold.  I'm glad Brady and Collin got to experience it with me this year.  We made a lot of memories over the years.  And finally I just want to say thank you to my coaches for being with me the whole way."

Girls Golf Team Struggles at IHSA State

Despite the struggles at IHSA State, Coach Doug Kell says that his team should be proud of their work and that he is "very proud of the team's performance this year."  He shared, "My expectations have been surpassed.  Conference champions, Regional champions, 2nd place at Sectional, and made it to State as a team.  It was an amazing opportunity for the younger girls to gain experience at the State level and a perfect way for the Seniors to end their high school careers.  So many golfers play their entire high school career and never get that opportunity. I hope the younger players use this year as motivation to work hard going into next year and repeat their successes."  While the team didn't advance, Brynn Stiegman and Shelby Thorson advanced as individuals and experienced 36 holes at state. Coach Kell shared, "They may not have played as well as they wanted to, or could have, but I am very proud of them and happy I got to walk day two at State with them."

The girls playing golf at State experience a special treat when they are formally announced on the first tee by a woman dressed in "these super fun get-ups" as Brynn Stiegman called them.  She talks to each girl individually about what they do and "actually really relaxes people before their first tee shot" according to Brynn.  Coach Kell shared that about the woman:  "she has been announcing State for the 13th straight year.  That means that her 1st year of announcing was my first year coaching and Nashville's first girls golf State trophy (3rd in 2010).  Her outfits, personality, kindness, and enthusiasm are just as amazing!  She gets a little choked up when a Senior (that she has seen for 3-4 straight years) is playing her last event.  It doesn't matter if it's someone's first State appearance or their fourth, she always tries to find something interesting about that person to announce and help ease the tension."

IMG_9892.MOV

Brynn Stiegman making her second appearance at State in her first two years of high school shared, "The state tournament is an accomplishment that a lot of golfers do not get to experience in their high school careers.  Unfortunately as a team, we did not advance to day two.  But a personal goal of mine was to make it to day two no matter what, and I accomplished this individually.  I did not score as well as I would have hoped, but I know I have the ability to do better.  The conditions up north make it tough, with the changing weather and wind.  Overall, it was a great season."

Parker Renken is STATE BOUND

At the Class 1A Sectional on Monday, October 2, Parker tied for 3rd with a score of 73, placing him in the top 10 qualifiers for IHSA STATE. The 10th place golfer shot a 75, so there was little room for error with this competitive group of golfers.

Parker will close out his high school career by competing in Bloomington on October 6th and 7th at the Class 1A State Tournament. Best of luck, Parker!

Boys Golf Team Closes the Season at Sectionals

Congratulations on a great season for NCHS Boys Golf! At the Class 1A Sectional on October 2nd, the team finished 7th with a combined score of 325. A great effort by the group and a solid way to finish the season

“You don’t have the game you played last year or last week. You only have today’s game. It may be far from your best, but that’s all you’ve got. Harden your heart and make the best of it.”

-Walter Hagen

Parker Renken reflected on his NCHS golf career. "I am really excited to go up to state for my second year, it is one of my biggest accomplishments in my high school career. I think my game has improved a great amount since my freshman year and I'm glad it's all coming together for my last match of my high school career. Without my coaches and teammates none of this would be possible. I'm excited for Brady and Collin to experience the state tournament with me."

Girls Golf Team is STATE BOUND

The Nashville Hornettes earned second place at the Class 1A Girls Golf Sectional with a score of 346 on Monday, 10/2/23 qualifying as a team for IHSA STATE on October 6 - 7, 2023, at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur.  The Southern Illinoisan described this team as being on a "hot streak."  Coach Kell echoed that sentiment sharing, "I'm very proud of the team, and super happy to be returning to the 'promised land' with a full team.  The girls all played well, especially overall 5th place finisher Brynn Stiegman.  With the exception of Brynn (who consistently plays in the #1 spot), it seems that different players play well at the right time to help the team win."  Coach Kell indicated that the team is achieving their goals and have no intention to let up now.  He said that they are going "back to work for the next couple of days" to get ready for "Hornette Golf" this weekend.  We wish you all the best, ladies.

Sophomore Brynn Stiegman placed fifth individually with a score of 75.

What a fantastic season for these senior golfers.

Karlie Stein tees off at Sectionals

Coach Doug Kell, Arabella Alfeldt (94), Zoe Lopez (88), Shelby Thorson (89), Brynn Stiegman (75), Karlie Stein (94), Lily Emge (106), and Volunteer Coach Rachael Kell

Senior Zoe Lopez: "As a senior, I am beyond excited to be able to share this experience with the best teammates!  Not only has our team worked extremely hard to get here, but the growth of improvement from all of us as individuals is astronomical. Many of us have shot new personal records this season which is huge for our team score.  I am so thankful for my three amazing coaches who have helped me this season, and the possibility of earning a banner for the Assembly Hall is our goal coming home from state."

Senior Shelby Thorson: "Coming into the season we all had very high expectations not only for ourselves but as a team.  We knew we were all capable of great things and now we are proving it! I am beyond proud of my teammates. I couldn't ask for a better group of girls for my senior year! Let's bring home a banner!!"

Sophomore Brynn Stiegman: "Last year I got to experience the state tournament as a freshman individually, and I felt a lot of pressure and nerves.  But this year I am so excited that we as a team get to experience this together!  In this rollercoaster sport, getting to State is such an accomplishment.  We have so much fun when we are together, and I am so excited for this weekend.  We get to make lots of memories, have fun, and play some golf!  We have all worked so hard this season, so I am very proud of this team.  We get one last go at it together, and we are going to make the most of it!"

Sophomore Lily Emge: "I am extremely honored to have the opportunity to represent such a great school and town at the state level.  I would like to thank each of my teammates, Shelby, Zoe, Keeghan, Jaymie, Arabella, Katie, Emma, Brynn, Siena, Chloe, and Karlie for being so supportive and working hard to make the team better.  I would also like to thank our coaches, Coach Kell, Rachael, and Ryan, for always believing in us and pushing us to our full potential.  Lastly, I would like to thank our teachers for being patient and working diligently to get us caught up on all of the school work we have missed throughout the season.  Only six girls are able to represent the team at State, but there are so many more members of this team and their work does not go unnoticed.  I am beyond thrilled to represent this team at state and hopefully bring a banner back to Nashville!"

Freshman Karlie Stein:  "As a freshman, this experience has been amazing. I am so lucky that I could be on varsity as a freshman. I have made some great friends on the team. I will never forget this experience. I really look forward to the years to come!"

Girls Golf Wins Conference Title

Congratulations to the Girls Golf Team for winning the River to River Conference Title on Tuesday, 9/19/23 with a team score of 370, which the Southern Illinoisan reported was 64 strokes better than the second place Anna Jonesboro Wildcat team.  Coach Kell shared about the team's efforts and accomplishments: "Goal #1 complete.  Now we focus on Regional and the rest of the post- season.   The girls played well today with a couple  of exceptional performances from Brynn (Conference Champion) and Karlie (Runner Up).   Of course, it takes a team effort to win a championship, so I also want to congratulate the other girls on fine performances.  They really gave it their all and 'grinded' it out to the end.  It was a great day for golf, and bringing home the Championship made for a perfect ending.  Finishing with All-Conference Honors included Brynn Stiegman (84), Karlie Stein (92), Shelby Thorson (96), Zoe Lopez (98), and Lily Emge (116).  Siena Popejoy also played well in her first conference tournament action.  We are a young and talented team.  I have high expectations for the golf team for many years to come."

Brynn, the Conference Champion, was quoted in the Southern Illinoisan sharing: "It feels really good to win today because I’ve been working really hard all summer at my game. I hit my irons better today. I putted better. The work has paid off."  Brynn also complimented her team: "I think [this title] shows that we're coming together as a team at the right time."

Hornette Volleyball to Sponsor Fanconi Anemia Awareness Night

NCHS Volleyball wants you to learn more about Fanconi Anemia. On September 21, the team is raising awareness and money for this cause that is near and dear to many of the players. Zach Brinkmann was a member of the Class of 2024, and NCHS Volleyball wants to honor Zach’s memory by celebrating his life.

"He LOVED all sports,” remembers his mom, Becky. “He enjoyed playing soccer, baseball, basketball, and running hurdles in track. He enjoyed taking off on his 4 wheeler at every opportunity. He also enjoyed fishing and swimming.” In addition to his love of physical activities, Zach was mentally strong. He was known for not complaining about his condition and putting his faith, instead, in God.

Zach’s medical challenges took him to specialists around the globe. According to his mom, the experience “made him an expert in traveling and finding his way through airports,” including New York, Maine, Hawaii, Australia, Colorado, and Florida. In 2014, at age 8, he had a bone marrow transplant in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was isolated with his mom for four months, 600 miles from his friends and family. But that would not be the last experience. Zach had multiple cancer diagnoses related to Fanconi Anemia that led him to treatments in New York for tongue cancer and esophageal cancer on two different occasions in 2020. Each time he was enduring these specialized surgeries, he had his friends and family supporting him the whole way. One example that Zach’s mom, Becky, recalls is from June 2020. He was welcomed home from New York by friends and family lined up along the roads of his neighborhood, and a fire truck was leading the way home. “He looked at me and said, ‘Really? I was only gone a week,’” recalls his mom. She said that was one of many examples of Zach preferring to avoid the limelight, be observant, and do what he needed to do.  Zach was finally able to attend his first NCHS in-class day in April 2021. He was able to take Drivers Ed and get his permit on his fifteenth birthday.

If you are planning to attend the Volleyball game this Thursday, wear either the t-shirt purchased during recent school-wide sales or the color teal blue for Fanconi Anemia. Help NCHS Volleyball paint the Assembly Hall teal blue!

What is Fanconi Anemia?

According to Fanconi.org, Fanconi anemia (known as FA) is a complex disease that can affect every system of the body, and the severity of symptoms can differ widely from person to person. A diagnosis of FA has social, emotional, and financial impacts on the individual and family, as well. Being educated and supported throughout the process of diagnosis, and into treatment and management, is paramount to well-being and coping with a chronic disease.  To learn more about this disease, the research being done to stop it, and how you can become involved in the search for a cure, click here to visit Fanconi.org.

There is still time to donate to this great cause. Purchase a Fanconi Awareness bracelet! 1 for $3.00 or 2 for $5.00. Visit the office or contact Ella Wesselmann to get yours today!

NCHS Cross Country Incorporates Yoga

On Friday, September 8, the NCHS Cross Country Team tried something new.  Knowing "that runners are notorious for not stretching correctly or enough," Coach Olson approached Mrs. Colleen Seaton, a certified yoga instructor, about working with the athletes to understand the importance of stretching their muscles before they run.  Mrs. Seaton earned her RYT 200 hour in Power Vinyasa Yoga and Sup and her RYT 300 hour in Vinyasa: Yin, Youth yoga, athletic stretch, restorative, adaptive yoga, and meditation.  She is certified through Yoga Alliance as an RYT 500 instructor, which is the highest level of education certification available.

Mrs. Seaton shared some background about yoga and its benefits:  "Yoga is a form of stretching and strengthening that builds the core and supports the mind. The few stretches I shared with the CC team were those designed to assist with stretching and lengthening their muscles.  I also shared a few suggestions about breathing. Breathing is something we all do naturally, but utilizing appropriate breathwork will allow an athlete to calm their mind and improve their performance."  She continued: "I am a firm believer in research and many studies have proven a direct correlation between yoga/meditation and the positive impact it has on the brain and body.  We have an increasing number of students who struggle with anxiety, stress, depression, and other physical injuries who would benefit from learning how to properly breathe, self-monitor, stretch, build core strength, and learn to 'sit' with themselves. I truly feel that adults and children all need different tools to assist with self-monitoring and supporting their emotional and physical health."  Both Coach Olson and Mrs. Seaton observed that the cross country athletes were fully involved in the session.  Mrs. Seaton shared that "the majority of them were surprised by how their bodies felt when they were in certain poses.  Many were grateful for the poses and some of them even commented that they felt more loose and relaxed."   Coach Olson and Mrs. Seaton are both excited to provide this opportunity and hope to do it again in the near future.

If any faculty, staff, and students are interested in learning more about yoga locally, follow Finding Balance Yoga 327 on Facebook to sign up for a class led by certified yoga instructors.
