Hornet Basketball Racking UP the WINS
Debuting their new RED retro uniforms with an old school Hornet, the BIG BLUE beat the Carterville Lions on Friday, December 17th in the Lions Den bringing their record to 6 - 2 for the season. The new uniforms will be worn at away games every so often. Red, of course, is an accent color to Nashville's blue and white as a connection to Ashley High School, which became a part of NCHS decades ago.
Don't worry, NCHS Hornet fans, you can still chant GO BIG BLUE and the team will respond.
And speaking of responding, if you haven't had a chance to attend a game yet, get yourself there as you are missing out: the Hornets are passing and moving the ball, dunking, and alley-ooping their way to victories.

NCHS Hornettes Continue to Play Well
The Hornettes took to the hardwood twice the week of final exams beating both Carterville on Tuesday and Pinckneyville on Thursday bringing their record to a solid 8 - 2.
Alyssa Cole at the free throw line ALWAYS makes it look so easy.
The definite nail biter of the two games was Nashville vs. Carterville in the Lions Den. Nashville fought hard and played well winning the game by a narrow margin of 61 - 55. The game opened up quickly for the Hornettes with two baseline drives and scores by Jo Donato. Halle Rueter couldn't miss and scored 15 points in the game. And one of the biggest team contributors to the winning game was the shooting from the free throw line. The Hornettes went 22 / 25 at the line for an 88% shooting average.

Story Time: NCHS Hornet Football Team Is State Runner-Up
Once upon a time on a bitterly cold November Friday afternoon in DeKalb, IL, a band of brothers walked onto Brigham Field at the NIU Huskie Stadium for what would be their last time in their high school careers. They faced the short run and difficult to contain offense of the Wilmington Wildcats. From the onset, the Hornets struggled...perhaps it was the 28 degree weather, perhaps it was the game's intensity, or perhaps it just, unfortunately, wasn't the ending the Hornets were hoping for. Though the Hornets walked off the field losing 24 - 7, they DID NOT WALK OFF ALONE. The stands were packed with Hornet fans...fellow students, friends, and family, and those unable to travel were listening to WNSV or watching the game on NFHS. This NCHS Hornet football team should be proud of their SECOND PLACE finish in IHSA Class 2A State as it is a finish that is hard fought and well-deserved recognition. The END (but only for these 16 seniors)

Story Time: NCHS Hornet Football Is HEADED TO THE CLASS 2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Once upon a time on a sunny November Saturday in Nashville, IL, a team of football brothers took the field to play their last game on home turf against the 23rd state ranked St. Theresa Bulldogs. The Hornets were challenged by the offensive Bulldog juggernaut* that was led by senior running back Denim Cook, but the Hornets battled until the end. And until the end it took as the Hornets were trailing two touchdowns with less than 6:40 left in the fourth quarter. Armed with a secret kicking weapon known as Eduardo "Eddie" Garibay, the Hornets would prevail recovering two perfectly placed on side kicks in those remaining minutes and setting up a prime field goal location in the center of the field for Eddie to kick the game winning field goal. The players, coaches, and crowd went wild in awe and excitement of the victory as the Hornets won the game 37 - 35. And they lived happily ever....well, at least for that day...until they began to prepare for the much anticipated Class 2A State Championship game against Wilmington (12-0) at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 26. to be continued...
Seeing the ball go through the uprights was "a beautiful moment" describes Eddy.

Freshman Hornette Basketball Finding What Does and Doesn't Work For Them
The freshman year of basketball is always a transitional process as girls from multiple feeder schools come into NCHS with different approaches and knowledge of plays. This year is no different for the freshmen as they are working together to understand Nashville's basketball approach. Additionally, as the team is smaller, some sophomores are coming off the bench each game to provide support. The ladies have started the season 0-2 with a loss to first Okawville and Central just this week. Though it's a slower start, don't discount these ladies yet. There is sure to be improvement on the hardwood this season.

You can find NCHS Cheer working hard in the North Gym Lobby on a daily basis.
For a very quick sneak peak into what NCHS Cheer is working on, view the video above.
NCHS Cheer Prepares to Put Some Pep in Your Step
NCHS Cheer is in the process of transitioning between supporting two sports. You might be surprised to learn that preparing and cheering for football and basketball are not the same thing. For starters, there are the IHSA rules regarding when Cheerleaders can tumble, present floor cheers, and where to stand - which changes depending on the flow of the game. The length of time to cheer is also doubled as the group cheers for two games instead of one, so new and extra cheers have to be learned. Finally, there are additional traditions that have to be learned to pump up the crowd, such as Rebel Rouser, Minnesota Rouser (the fight song), and changing the way they perform Illinois Loyalty (the school song) to share the floor with the Stingers.
Relying on past experience is easier than it sounds. Senior Ella Jones is the only member of NCHS Cheer to have previously cheered at basketball games. Due to Covid restrictions last season, Cheerleaders were not allowed to participate. Ella shared that she is feeling the pressure of being the only veteran cheerleader and leading the team into the unknown. But at least they're all in it together. Ella shared another major difference between cheer in football and basketball season. "You have to pay closer attention during the entire game because the type of cheers you do can change so quickly due to the pace of the game. And you have to focus and tune out distractions to make that happen."
Preparing for basketball is an exciting new adventure for the remainder of the squad. Sophomore Brooke Harris discussed being new to the basketball experience: "I always really enjoyed watching the cheerleaders and going to most games during middle school so I sort of know some things about basketball season. It’ll probably be quite busy though, especially if we make it to state with football. We’ve also recently learned Rebel Rouser and our Lineup cheer as well as basketball sidelines so that’s also a small change. Working as a team to learn these new cheers has been really awesome so far and I hope we continue to do well through basketball and football season!" Sophomore Lucy Walters is also excited to be cheering in both seasons: "This year is actually my first year ever being involved with cheer, so I was very nervous in the beginning. But, it has been an unforgettable time because the rest of the team have become friends and I have found a new sport that I love." Freshmen Therese Herrmann also shared her excitement about how the season is going: "This is my first time cheerleading in my life, and the experience is amazing. I love the team and the coaches, and I send a sad goodbye to Mrs. Luessenheide, who was only helping during football season."
It's hard to be humble when you can jump, stunt, and tumble.

NCHS Hornets Advance to Final Four of IHSA Class 2A State Play Offs
The only thing COLD on the Hornet football field on Saturday, 11/13/21, was the weather as the Hornets came out HOT and stayed that way the entire game. Adding to the heat were senior quarterback Kolten Gajewski who threw for 297 yards and senior running back Connor Gladson who rushed for 101 yards and scored four touchdowns. With this resounding 43 - 19 win against the Pana Panthers, the Hornets have earned their spot in the final four of the Class 2A State Playoffs. They will take on Decatur's St. Theresa Bulldogs at home (unlike in 2019 when the Hornets traveled to Decatur in the final four). Game time is Saturday, 11/20/21 at 1:00 p.m.

Hazel Konkel Makes NCHS School History
Hazel shared on Instagram:
If you told me a week ago I would be the first NCHS swimmer going to state, I wouldn’t have believed you. I went into Sectionals thinking it would be my last competitive swim meet with my friends and coach, but, little did I know, I would win my races and qualify for State. This experience still feels so unreal, but I wouldn’t have wanted to finish it any other way.

Swimmers at the State Swim Meet on Friday, 11/12/21 were really super fast, and senior Hazel Konkel knew that going into her two events, the 50 and 100 yard freestyle, so she set a few goals for herself: 1) don't get last, 2) drop time, 3) get a national time, and 4) have a BLAST. Hazel accomplished all four of these goals.

NCHS Hornets Advance to Round 3 of IHSA State Play Offs
The Hornets controlled the game against Bismarck-Henning from the start. Senior Quarterback Kolten Gajewski said it best after just two quick minutes in the first quarter when he motivated his teammates: "Guys, the tempo's going to wear them out." And wear out the Blue Devils the Hornets most definitely did. Starting on the 45 yard line and scoring after just two short minutes in the first quarter, the Hornets commanded the game making tackles, forcing fumbles, blocking extra points, and running the ball well. Props, however, to the wearied Blue Devils who never gave up as the game ended with a final score of 33 - 26. Nashville has earned the right to play again at HOME when they take on the Pana Panthers this Saturday, November 13th at 1:00 p.m.

Successful Sectional Swim for Hornettes!
Hornette Swimmers brought their speed to the Edwardsville Sectional, Saturday. Senior Hazel Konkel went into Saturday's swim planning to just have fun and enjoy one more swim event, but it looks like her plans have changed. Hazel finished first in both the 50 and 100 Freestyle, and earned a trip to IHSA Swim State. Congratulations, Hazel.
But wait, that's not all. Individual and team swims for the day were outstanding as well. Sophie Schubert placed 7th in the 50 Free, and Scarlet Konkel placed 8th in the 200 Free and 7th in the 500 Free. The Medley Relay team of Hazel, Scarlet, Sophie, and Abby Kessler placed 5th.
Sophie, Scarlett, Hazel, Abby, and Vita brought high energy to Swim Sectionals.

Hornette Swimmers "Just Keep Swimming" all the way to Sectionals.
Five Hornette swimmers will take to the lanes in Edwardsville on Saturday in IHSA Sectional action. Senior Hazel Konkel, Juniors Abby Kessler and Sophie Schubert, Sophomore Vita Bartolotta, and Freshman Scarlett Konkel are ready to go! When asked how she was feeling about swimming as a senior, Hazel replied, "As a dual sport athlete, I have not had as much time to prepare for this year's sectionals. Last season, IHSA Swim only had a Sectionals meet and did not host a State meet. Unfortunately, I had won the 100 Freestyle, so I would have qualified for state. This season I am just hoping to have a fun last swim meet with my friends and coaches." In addition to individual swim, the Hornettes are also swimming as a team. As part of the Individual Medley, Sophie shared, "Well, I’m excited to swim. This season is hopefully going to be a good one because I am at the top of my age group. I’m super excited to have the first ever medley relay consisting of me, Hazel Konkel, Abby Kessler, and Scarlet Konkel." Abby was just as excited to share, "I would say the best thing so far about this season is it being back to normal. It is so fun competing with my friends and watching each other improve. I am very excited to swim this weekend at Sectionals with all of my high school friends that are from Nashville and other high schools." If you see any of these five swimmers, wish them best of luck for Saturday!

NCHS Hornet Football Headed to IHSA Class 2A Playoffs
The 7-1 Hornets took on the 1-7 Frankfort Redbirds on a chilly Friday night, but the Hornets showed their power throughout the game. The website westfrankfortsports.com reported that "the powerful Hornets, who average over 400 yards and over 40 points per game on offense, showed why they are one the best teams in Southern Il. as they easily handled West Frankfort in a 54-0 victory."
The NCHS Hornets walk to every field two-by-two, hand in hand...symbolic of their brotherhood.

As for myself, I'm very much looking forward to postseason because of the atmosphere that the people of Nashville put on. Day games with packed stands...there's no place I'd rather be."

Stingers Showcase Solo Talents at Start the Beat
Illinois Drill Team Association (IDTA) was back in person for their annual Start the Beat Showcase this year, and NCHS Stingers brought their "A Game." Start the Beat allows IDTA performers to showcase solos, duets, and trios, and compete for the opportunity to bring those performances to the IDTA State Championships. Stingers have been working on their solos since summer and brought their best to Bloomington. Congratulations to Emma Grathwohl for her second place finish in Junior competition, and Nevaeh San Nicholas for her third place finish in Sophomore competition. We look forward to seeing you all perform both at NCHS and competitively this winter.
NCHS Hornet Football -- Back to Back Conference Champions
Hornet football is a force to be reckoned with this year, and they showed the DuQuoin Indians just that when they traveled south to pick up their 37-14 win and conference championship. The Standard Press reports that the "last time the Hornets won in DuQuoin during the regular season was in the 1990s." This conference back to back win is notable as well as it is only the third time in NCHS history (1997-1998 under Bruce Reeder and 1969-1970 under Mike Taylor).
