School News
Friday 19th December 2025
As we reach the end of this term, it’s hard to believe how much has happened since we started the school year in September. The weeks have flown by, and we are always truly amazed at the resilience and focus shown by our pupils as they settle into new classes—and for our youngest children, as they begin their school journey with us.
The fantastic learning that takes place every day is a testament to the pupils and to all of the staff who work tirelessly to support them. As a school leader, I see this every day when visiting lessons; how engaged and excited the children are in school. This term, we have had our usual plethora of trips and visits, exciting opportunities within school and the introduction of our VR headsets, which many of the children have loved. We have seen a huge level of progress and effort from pupils, something that would not be possible without the support of such a great staff team. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff for their unwavering support and determination. It is this commitment that makes our school community such a special place to be part of.
This sense of community has been especially evident over the last couple of weeks as we’ve come together to celebrate Christmas. From the superb nativity performances to the joy of sharing Christmas dinner yesterday (although there wasn’t a sprout in sight!), these moments remind us of how special it is to be part of our Nash Mills family.
Within school, we’ve also been reflecting on the importance of faith—how, through the Christmas story, so many people had to put trust in others. This season is a wonderful time to remember those around us who we rely on every day, those who are always there for us, especially when times are hard. Let’s take a moment to show how thankful we are for these people.
All that remains is for me to wish you all a very Happy Christmas. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Tuesday 6th January 2026!
Nativities
This year’s production of Lights, Camel, Action! was, as always, an absolute delight to be part of. The children demonstrated incredible confidence, resilience and creativity throughout. With so many lines to learn and dance moves to remember, they rose to the challenge and delivered their performances with joy, enthusiasm and big smiles.
The Key Stage One team are extremely proud of everything the children achieved. Performing in front of a hall full of adults is no easy task, yet they made it look effortless. Thank you to everyone who came to watch — we couldn’t do it without you!!!

Grandparents Afternoon
On Monday, we welcomed grandparents from our school community for an afternoon of festive cheer. Each year group showcased something. Early Years performed some of the songs from their wonderful Nativity, as did Years 1 and 2. Years 3 and 4 demonstrated the learning they had undertaken this term with the recorder and ukulele and Years 5 and 6 sung some carols. The audience enjoyed a warm cup of tea or coffee and a mince pie while they were watching. It was lovely to be able to showcase all of the children's wonderful learning to a slightly wider audience.
Year 6 Carol Singing
Year 6 pupils had a wonderful time bringing festive joy to the Marlowes at Hemel Hempstead as they sang Christmas carols to raise funds for the charity No Crib for a Bed. Their voices and enthusiasm truly captured the spirit of giving this season.
Mrs. Ofosu: “I’m so proud of how the children embraced this opportunity. They sang beautifully and showed such kindness and empathy; it was a wonderful way to spread joy and happiness.”
Parish Council Christmas Card Competition
Recently, Nash Mills Parish Council hosted a community event at The Denes, featuring a Children’s Christmas Art Competition. We are delighted to share that Lily was chosen as the KS1 winner and Lily-Roma was chosen as the KS2 winner for their beautiful Christmas artwork!
Other entries from children within the school were shared and the evening included a range of carols being sung alongside a brass band. It was a lovely evening that highlighted our community spirit. We are very proud of all the children who took part.
Year 5 visit the British Museum
"We saw lots of things we'd learnt about in our lessons at school including the Rosetta stone. We saw jewellery from the Egyptian times and saw mummified bodies and animals! It was very fun!"
Amber and Ffion
"It was very interesting seeing all the artefacts from that time and how colourful and perfect they still are even though they are over 4,000 years old! We really enjoyed looking at them all."
EJ and Eddie
Art Week
This year’s Art Week celebrated artistic expression through watercolour, charcoal and paint, each bringing unique textures and effects to the pupils’ work.
The children painted stunning landscapes inspired by different continents and cultures, including:
African scenes full of vibrant colours and patterns.
Japanese art influenced by Hokusai’s iconic wave.
David Hockney’s fields, capturing bold lines and vivid tones.
Space landscapes and mountain ranges, pushing imagination beyond Earth.
A tribute to Van Gogh’s Starry Night, blending swirling skies with expressive brushwork.
Snowy winter landscapes, bringing seasonal beauty to life with cool tones and delicate details.
It was a joy to see pupils create such diverse and imaginative pieces, reflecting both cultural appreciation and artistic skill.
Nursery Police Visit
Nursery's topic this half term has been 'people who help us'. The children had a fantastic end to this topic with a very exciting visit from the police! The children got to try on uniform, explore the police van and find out what the police do to help us. A big thank you to the local police officers for taking the time to visit the school and provide early years with this valuable experience.
PTA
Huge congratulations to our PTA team for a wonderful Christmas Fayre, which was held after school on Friday 12th December. There were a number of games stalls and competitions around the school including our YEar 6 enterprise stalls, which were managed brilliantly by the pupils. The PTA even managed to book Santa to visit us once again, during what must be an incredibly busy time of year for him!
As highlighted below, the event raised over £3,500, which is an astonishing amount, all of which will go towards projects to further improve and develop our school.
Thank you all for your support!

Healthy Snacks
Please can we also remind you that any snacks or packed lunch contents should be healthy.
Morning snacks should be a piece of fruit or similar. No chocolate or sugary snacks please.
Please also remember that we are allergy aware and, as such, nuts should not be bought into school for break or lunchtimes.
If you send grapes as a snack, please cut these in half to reduce the risk of choking.
Jewellery
A reminder, that jewellery should not be worn in school. This is to help keep the children safe whilst they are playing.
Those with pierced ears may wear a set of plain studs, but these need to be removed for PE lessons.
Pupils may wear an watch, however please avoid smart watches as these breach our online safety rules.
If you have any specific questions around this, please speak to your child's class teacher.
As you know, reading regularly at home with your children is incredibly important. A good bedtime story is not only helpful in maintaining a strong routine in the evening, it also helps children to develop their imagination and vocabulary. You can look for hard copies of these stories in shops or at the library, but alternatively, most are also on You Tube.
Miss Bentley says...I really love 'Stick Man' by Julia Donaldson. It’s full of adventure, humour, and heart. The story follows Stick Man on a long journey home, where he is finally reunited with his family just in time for Christmas. I especially love hearing about all the different objects Stick Man becomes along the way; it reminds me of Forest School, where we create our own stick people and take them on fun outdoor adventures!
Mr Maher says...A Christmas favourite in our house is 'Bear stays up for Christmas' by Karma Wilson. This fantastic picture book is all about how bear spends Christmas Eve preparing his den for Christmas, helped and supported by his friends who all try to stop him falling asleep. As night comes, his friends all drop off, however Bear can't sleep and so he sets about making some extra special surprises for his friends. But who will prepare his special surprise?
Miss Brewer says...'Tosca's Christmas' by Anne Mortimer. I was given this book as a little girl many years ago, and even now it comes down from the loft each year. I love lingering over the beautiful illustrations, especially as I’ve always had a soft spot for cats. It tells the tale of a little cat called Tosca who gets in everyone's way during Christmas preparations and is gently shooed outside, where she is sadly forgotten. But on Christmas night, just when the world feels most magical, Santa comes along and brings Tosca back inside for a warm, festive snuggle.
Mrs Nicholls says...a book I really enjoy at Christmas is 'The Boy Called Christmas' by Matt Haig, which I read with my children. It follows Nikolas, a boy who sets off on an adventure to the Far North to find his dad and ends up discovering elves, magic and a hidden world of snow. Along the way he learns about courage, kindness and not giving up, even when things feel impossible. The short chapters make it a great choice for children to dip into a little bit at a time.
Mr Shane says...'How Winston delivered Christmas' - We love this book at home and read it every year - we start on the 1st of December as every 'chapter' is for a day in December leading up to Christmas Eve. Winston the mouse is on a Very Important Mission. On Christmas Eve, he finds a letter to Father Christmas that did not make it to the post box – so, with no time to lose, he sets out to deliver it himself in time for Christmas Day! He has a lot of Very Exciting Adventures on his Very Important Mission and makes some wonderful friends along the way. At the end of every chapter there is also a Christmas craft to enjoy.
Miss Webb says...'Dream Snow by Eric Carle'. This story is perfect for early years! It's a Christmas story about a kind farmer and his animal friends. It’s snowing, and we get to say hello to all the animals and make their sounds together. Then there’s a special Christmas surprise at the end, and everyone feels warm, happy, and ready for Christmas. 🎄❄️
Message from our Governors
Dear Parents, Carers and Children,
September seems such a long time ago but here we are at the end of a very busy term at our school. Governors have been visiting the school regularly and have witnessed lots of amazing activities and learning by the children. We have seen accomplished and informative class assemblies, fun Christmas productions and inspirational outdoor activities in the Forest School. Thank you for playing your part in making our school the unique place that it is. This term we also welcomed our new vicar, Rev David Jones, to the governing body and the school; welcome Rev Jones to the Nash Mills family. On behalf of all of the governors I would like to wish everyone a very peaceful and relaxing holiday.
All our good wishes for 2026.
Dr Sylvia Low, Chair of Governors
Staffing Update
It is not uncommon when we reach a school holiday to say 'goodbye' to some members of our community. Nursery parents will already be well aware, but in January we will see a few changes in our Nursery class as Miss Archer will be leaving us. Miss Archer has been part of the team at Nash Mills since 2020, originally joining us to support pupils during and following the COVID epidemic before moving into Nursery, where she has made so many wonderful changes and been such a fantastic teacher to many of our pupils during their first stage of schooling. From January, we are pleased to share that Miss Bentley will be taking on some of the teaching commitment in Nursery as she enters the final stage of her teacher training.
We will also be saying a fond farewell to Mrs Hussain, who is in school before and after the children each day to ensure that it is clean and ready for learning. Mrs Hussain has been a cleaner and part of the team at Nash Mills for almost 30 years! We will be sad to see her leave us, but as she starts her retirement, hope she gets some well earned rest!
Thank you!
All of our staff would like to thank you for all of your generous seasonal gifts over the past few days. We feel very lucky to be part of such a wonderful school community and wish everyone the best for a lovely festive season.
The last two weeks have been incredibly challenging, with cold and flu illnesses affecting both pupils and staff significantly. Despite this, we’re proud that all our usual activities have continued without any real impact on the offer for pupils—thank you for your resilience and support! We hope the upcoming break gives everyone time to recuperate and return refreshed for an exciting new term.
Over the last fortnight, Year 5 achieved the highest attendance at 96.8%, showing fantastic commitment. Year 3 followed with 94.7%, while Year 4 reached 93.8%. Attendance in Nursery was 92%, and Reception came in at 90.5%. Lower down the list, Year 6 recorded 89.9%, Year 1 had 89.6%, and Year 2 finished at 88.9%. These figures reflect the impact of illness, but we appreciate everyone’s efforts to keep attendance strong during a tricky period.
Looking at the whole term, Year 5 again leads the way with an impressive 97.6%. Year 3 achieved 95.8%, while both Year 4 and Reception recorded 95.6%. Year 2 reached 94.7%, and Year 6 was close behind at 94.6%. Year 1 finished the term at 92.4%, and Nursery at 90.2%. Overall, these numbers show great commitment across the school, and we look forward to improving even further next term.
A huge well done to Year 5, who have led the way both in the last fortnight and across the term! Let’s aim to boost those numbers even further next term as we work together to keep attendance strong.
