End of Term Message
This is one of the best times of the year for us teachers (and not just because of the upcoming summer holidays!). Every teacher at Nash Mills cares deeply about our children and it is the time of the year that we are all able to take stock and look at the distance travelled over the past 12 months. It has been truly fantastic to see so much progress being made.
In Early Years, the children have begun to read and write whilst developing the essential skills needed to be great, confident leaners.
These skills continue into Key Stage 1 where we see the children beginning to develop what they can do; we have had another great year in terms of high achievement and hearing some of the written work that the children shared in recent Class Worship was astounding!
In Key Stage 2, there is a big jump up in terms of the amount expected from the children and how much we have to pack into the curriculum, but it has been fantastic to see all of this being applied so well. The level of discussion in classes over the past few weeks has been brilliant to see and, again, it really highlights how well our children learn to confidently work alongside each other.
The wider curriculum is a key part of our offer at Nash Mills and we believe that by providing the children with a raft of experiences, we can help to enrich their understanding of the world which in turn will support their progress. Over the last year, our Biscuit Election, Year 2 trip to London on the train, whole school swimming and Early Years visit to the Zoo stand as particular highlights (among so many others) for me. It has also been brilliant to see changes to our curriculum; the introduction of Forest School, for example has been a wonderful addition. In these last weeks, it has also been a joy to watch our children all competing so skilfully and respectfully during our sports events, showing how their musical talents are shining through at our concert and the icing on the cake with our Year 5 and 6 production.
Of course this week we will see our Year 6 children leave us to move up to secondary school. They will all be greatly missed by pupils and staff alike. For some, the 8 years of primary school will have flown by and I'm sure they will have seen lots of changes in this time but will have many fond memories to take with them. We look forward to hearing all about how they get on in their new schools and the fantastic things that they achieve on the way. Year 6 - you will always be part of our Nash Mills family - please do pop back from time-to-time to see us.
In schools, there are usually a few changes at this time of year and we are really sad to be saying 'goodbye' to Mrs Thurgood, who has worked as a teaching assistant in our Key Stage 2 for a number of years, having been part of the Nash Mills staff since 2007! We wish Mrs Thurgood all the best moving forward and hope to see her from time to time. We are pleased to share that, last week, we recruited two new members of staff who will be joining us in September; Ms Finnis will be our new teaching assistant working in Year 5 and Mrs Paduchak will be supporting pupils in our Reception class. Both will be warmly welcomed in the new school year.
None of the work we do would be possible without such firm and enduring support for our school. To this, I would like to say a huge thank you to you, our families, for trusting us with your children and putting your faith in us. I know how tricky this can be at times, but through your support, we are able to continue to develop and aim to offer the best that we possibly can for your children.
It is also the perfect time to send our warmest thanks to the staff, all of whom have worked tirelessly this past year to achieve all of the amazing things listed above and have regularly gone above and beyond to ensure that you and your children are supported and cared for. We are very fortunate to have the staff we do and hope that they all get a well-earned rest during the summer.
Plans are already well-underway for ensuring that next year is even better and we shall be busy over the coming weeks making sure that everything is ready for the next year. The 2024/25 School Calendar will have been shared with you today and I hope gives a flavour of some of the things to come!
All that leaves me to do is to wish you all a fantastic summer. I hope you all manage to find some time to spend with your families and, fingers crossed, to have some brilliant days with a little bit of sun! We look forward to seeing you all again from Tuesday 3rd September!
Mr Maher
Message from the Governors
Dear Parents, Carers and Children,
Wow! Another school year has just whizzed by and what an amazing amount of things have happened. Governors have been in many times over the year. They have witnessed so many wonderful class assemblies showcasing all aspects of learning from music, science to maths and English; the children have shown how well they can communicate to each other and to you about what they have been doing in class. Furthermore, we have seen from your children, great work and attitudes to learning in the classroom and it is a real pleasure to see how knowledgeable they are and their willingness to share this with us.
In addition, there have been many changes in the outdoor spaces of the school, including the Forest School, new play trail and outdoor gym, which gives lots of opportunities for exploring the natural environment, exercise and play; these all have seen so much use already. I wish I had things like this when I was at school! Also, as governors we have had our usual meetings covering all aspects of school life, welcomed new governors and have made many decisions to ensure that the school is the safe, welcoming and supportive learning environment for all of your children.
On behalf of the Governing Body I would like to wish everyone a marvellous summer whatever you end up doing. See you in September!
Best wishes,
Dr Sylvia Low, Chair of Governors

Year 6 Archbishop of York Young Leader's Award
It was fantastic to see our Year 6 cohort collect their Arch Bishop of York Young Leaders Awards this week. The programme is undertaken by Year 6 every year as an opportunity for them to be the light in school and the wider community, they have very much demonstrated their leadership qualities this year, whether it was our Macmillan Coffee Morning, entertaining grandparents of our school or setting up their own enterprise they have definitely risen to the challenges!
Well done Year 6.
Times Tables Rockstars
Our final TTRS leader board of the year reflects studio speed, that is how long it takes pupils to answer questions. We have two pupils from Year 6 on the leader board so there will be spaces up for grabs when we come back in September, who is going to fill them?
Also in September we will start our TTRS Teacher challenge to see who the real Rock Stars are!
Well done to our top 3 Rock Stars this week!
Leader board this week

2nd - Isma'il (Y6)

Summer Reading Challenge
Summer is the perfect time for adventures, and what better way to explore new worlds than through books! We are excited to encourage all our students to participate in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge at your local library.
The Summer Reading Challenge is a fantastic opportunity for children to keep their reading skills sharp during the holiday break. By reading a variety of books, students can unlock their imagination, discover new interests, and earn fun rewards along the way.
All you have to do is pop along to your local library or you can even join in online this year!
We encourage all our students to take part in this wonderful program. Let’s make this summer a season of stories and adventures! For more information, visit your local library or check out their website.
Happy reading, and we can’t wait to hear about the fantastic books you discover this summer!
There will be a prize of 10 house points for every Summer Reading Challenge certificate Miss Brewer sees when we return!
Thank you to our wonderful volunteers!
We are incredibly grateful for the amazing volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to listen to our children read. Your support is invaluable in helping our students develop their reading skills and foster a love for literature. Each story shared and each word read aloud builds confidence and joy in our young readers. Your commitment makes a profound difference in their educational journey.
To all our current volunteers, thank you for your kindness, patience, and enthusiasm. You are a vital part of our school community, and we appreciate all that you do.
We are always looking for more volunteers! If you have some time to spare and a passion for helping children succeed, we would love to have you! Volunteering to listen to children read is a rewarding experience that leaves a lasting impact. No previous experience is necessary, just a willingness to help and a love for reading.
If you are interested in volunteering or would like more information, please contact the office and we will sort out the necessary paper work.

School Games Award
We were very proud this week to receive the School Games Gold Award for our work to develop PE and sport across the school. Throughout the year, this includes the work within lessons, at break and lunchtimes as well as all of the trips and visits that pupils are offered. We also report on how we try to help every pupil to be involved in sport, for example on events such as sports day and through our swimming provision.
It is fantastic to see all of the hard work recognised for this. A huge thank you to Mrs Lewis, as our PE and Sports Lead for the work she has done!
District Sports Awards Evening
Last Friday, the DSSN celebrated all the children of the district's achievements at the annual sports awards. Nash Mills had lots to celebrate with awards going to many of our children. It was lovely to see the smiles as they collected awards and to hear the wonderful things said about their abilities. We are so proud of you all!
Have you seen Ernie?
On Tuesday this week, our traffic-calming friend Ernie (the sign!) seems to have been taken or moved from the front of the school. We are not sure where he has gone, but if you notice him in the local area, please could you help him to find his way back?
Thank you for your help.
Pupil Premium
Did you know that your child may be able to receive additional support in school in addition to free school meals, if you qualify for certain benefits?
If you receive any of the following, your child may well be eligible for the Pupil Premium. This provides them with free school meals throughout their time at school, but also a range of additional things in school to help with their learning and engagement. If your child might be eligible, please visit the following site (https://www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/ufs/HCWH.eb?ebd=0&ebz=1_1717745705707) or speak to the school office who will be happy to help.
Income Support
Income-based Jobseekers Allowance
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
The guaranteed element of State Pension Credit
Child Tax Credit (as long as you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and you don't get more than £16,190 a year)
Working Tax Credit run-on (paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)
Universal Credit (with annual earned income of no more than £7,400 after tax and not including any benefits you get).
The application process only takes a few minutes and we are more than happy to provide support if it is needed.
Attendance
A few weeks ago, the Department for Education unveiled a raft of new measures aimed at improving attendance in schools. Within the guidance is a much more robust approach to dealing with term-time holidays, particularly those which are 5 days or longer.
We are currently looking into the implication of these new regulations, but would ask that if you are booking any holidays for the next year, you do your best to ensure that they happen outside of term time to avoid the risk of fines or prosecution.
It looks highly likely that schools will be compelled to issue fines for any family taking holidays during term time and we would like to avoid this if at all possible.

Final Thought
We know that childcare can be a challenge for many during the summer as can having ideas of what to do.
Below is the National Trust's challenge of 50 things to do before you are 11 3/4. Most ideas are based outdoors, which is a great place to be to appreciate the world around us. How many can you complete during the summer?
