The sun shone brightly for Year 4 as they travelled back into the Dark Ages on Wednesday, with a visit to Mountfitchet Castle. The children spent the day exploring the town and finding out all about how people lived during the period (even the gory bits!).
The children found out about the different jobs that would have been available within the castle, including the alchemist, the village surgeon and the priests (who would have been the only ones who could read!). They also found out about how people would be trained for combat from an early age, using places such as the pell, where they would have to practice their skills each day.

Year 6 had an unforgettable experience of stepping into the exciting world of news reporting at Skyup Academy Studios. Their experience was packed with learning, teamwork, and some hands-on fun as they took on the various roles that go into making a newscast come to life.
Some of the children took the seats behind the news desk, where they became the faces of the broadcast, some assumed the role of field reporters, a few students had the chance to operate the studio cameras and others took on the crucial task of being the news producers—the masterminds who decide what stories make it to air. At the control panel, a group of children worked with their editing team, where they practised how to piece together footage, add graphics, and ensure that everything is in sync for live broadcasting.
Year 3 had an amazing experience at Lee Valley. We took a long trip down memory lane to the beginning of our history timeline. The children looked and identified artefacts from small stone arrows to the sharp claws of prehistoric animals.
Turning out the lights, with only a small flame for light, the children took hold of their charcoal and drew the animals in sight - they had a go at cave painting. After lunch, the children got back to work by striking flint and stone together to create a spark, and eventually sparked cotton wool!
Meet our sports ambassadors - Betsan, Arnie, Aria and Ollie:
We have been at a training event today to learn and practice different activities we can run with children in school during lunch and break times.
We had a lot of fun and were inspired by Jordan Thomas, a former world champion in karate. We are looking forward to setting up games for everyone at school - the SAs.
This week's attendance scores are in, and it's time to celebrate our Attendance League champions, this week in the form of a match report!
🏆 For the third week in a row, Nursery have dominated the field with a perfect 100% attendance rate. Their commitment and teamwork continue to set the standard; well done Nursery!
Year 3 put up a strong performance this week, coming in just shy of perfection with a remarkable 99.6% attendance. Their efforts and enthusiasm have not gone unnoticed, similar to Year 6 who have maintained a solid presence with an impressive 98.6% attendance rate. All three classes are showcasing their readiness for the final stretch of the half term.
Next in the field are Year 5 (98%), Year 4 (97%) and Year 1 (96%), with Year 2 (95%) and Reception (91%) bringing up the rear. They’re making strides in the right direction, and with continued effort, they’re sure to climb the ranks in no time.
A huge thank you to all our students, parents, and staff for their continued support in promoting excellent attendance. Every day counts, and your efforts are having a significant impact.
This week's leader board for TTRS is about improvement in studio speed, the top 3 have all reduced their speed by at least 1 second, so well done to all.
Our Numbots leader board reflects the time that children have played this week, demonstrating that commitment to improving their basic Maths skills. Again, well done all.
Mr Shane's challenge to all pupils hit a glitch this week so will be sent on Monday!

At the start of the new school year, it is a good opportunity to share with you information about the curriculum we deliver at Nash Mills. This week, we will look at science and Forest School.
The reason for these two areas being covered together is that the aim of the Forest School is to expose pupils to the outdoors, allowing them time to explore and investigate the world around them. This is very similar to our science curriculum, which aims for children to be curious about the world around them and how it is changing. They will explore and investigate different ideas creatively to help us understand how and why things work as they do.
Each class studies a range of science-based topics each year, usually changing each half term, although some topics cover a whole term. During a topic, the children will learn key information (which will be shared with you on knowledge organisers), will investigate different ideas and will learn about a significant scientist from the area. The investigative skills are taught throughout each topic and focus on developing pupils to be able to observe, compare, look for patterns, organise information and research. An area that we are developing this year is how our children can talk about investigation more confidently using these specific terms.
During Forest School sessions, most classes cover elements of the science curriculum which look at plants, seasonal changes and animal habitats. It is much more valuable for many children to be able to get outside and see the world in action, rather than learning about it from the classroom. The school polytunnel means that we can grow things most of the year round.
This year, our school is also taking part in the Primary Science Quality Mark, which we hope will help Mrs Nicholls, as our science leader, to develop our curriculum even further so that our children can get the most from it.
As with our entire curriculum, more information about what we teach at Nash Mills can be found on the curriculum pages of our website. Please do have a look if you would like to learn a little more!

At the end of next week, we shall be seeking food for this year's Harvest collection. If you are able to add a few additional bits into this week's weekly shop, it is much appreciated and will be donated to one of the local community foodbanks to support families in need.
Pupils should bring any donations directly into class. Please ensure that things are in date.
Items usually in need include baby things (such as nappies and wipes), tins of food and hygiene products (such as toothpaste, toothbrushes and shower gel).
During the morning next Friday, the children will be walking to church to take part in our Harvest Service with Mother Alice.
Thank you, in advance, for your support!
Thank you for your donations towards our clothing bank, which was filled within two weeks! It has now been emptied so if you know of anyone with clothes to donate, please encourage them to come and drop bags off!
The school carpark is open between 7am and 6pm on weekdays. Members of the local community are more than welcome to use it too so please spread the word!
If you can spare any uniform, particularly tights/socks/underwear/skirts/trousers for us to keep as spare for younger children who may have the odd accident during the school day, we would be very grateful. If you can help, please pass any donations to the Nursery or Reception class teachers at drop off or pick up. Thank you for your support.

If you receive any of the following, your child may well be eligible for the Pupil Premium. This provides them with free school meals throughout their time at school, but also a range of additional things in school to help with their learning and engagement. If your child might be eligible, please visit the following site (https://www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/ufs/HCWH.eb?ebd=0&ebz=1_1717745705707) or speak to the school office who will be happy to help.

Hertfordshire Admissions would like to remind Year 6 parents to make an application online or on paper by the closing date of Thursday 31st October 2024 (during half term) if they haven't already done so. However, they strongly recommend that parents complete their application by Friday 25th October, so that if there are any queries, they can be dealt with by the Admissions Team ahead of the deadline.
We know that some children find it difficult to tell their adults about their time at school...for some, processing what has happened during their 6 hour-day can take some time!
Shared today are a number of question starters which may help! The advice around this is to be specific with the questions asked - "what did you do today?" is a big question as a lot will have happened between 8.40am and 3.15pm. Instead, perhaps try asking for a 'fun fact' or, for pupils in Reception or Year 1 ' what phonics sound they practiced'. For many children, this will be a much easier question to answer and may then lead to a better conversation!
I particularly like the question "What made you laugh today?".
I wonder what the last thing was that made you all laugh together?!
